Reporter they were on the ground and tried to cover them up so they were not hurt, and catherine, she was also there and saw a lot of activity and saw a lot of officers running around at one point after they got taken out of the Business Center and up above ground. She heard two loud bangs. He wasnt quite at thought they were gunshots and then she thought about it more and said it didnt sound like gunshots. Didnt make sense that they would be gunshots after they were taken out. And just scores and scores of people in the Capitol Center straight down from where i am standing now. I know its chaotic but are they giving you the idea that they did the evacuation with precision or are you getting the sense from folks that it was a free for all . Reporter everybody i talked to are saying that the Police Officers did an excellent job and they are running around and responding and telling people to get down and then when they escorted them out and you saw it in the videotape there were officers escorting people out trying to ensure that they were safe and armed with assault rifles making sure that they got out safely and early on, they were worried there might be a second shooter but thats just protocol. You have to to be aware that might be a possibility. But again as you heard the chief say no evidence that anyone else is involved, just the one shooter and as far as he is concerned, its just a criminal act. A lot of times, there is misinformation that gets cleared up later. We are live from the white house with information. Cam, what are you hearing . Reporter well, there were two lockdowns. The first one went into effect at 3 00 and lifted it was a precautionary message over at the capital and they shut down the lines, and then again, another lockdown. Secret service pushed people away from the fence line and into Lafayette Park and that one lasted half an hour and you can see the people behind me, and they were saying this was related to what was happening at the white house capital. And the white house was very busy with the easter egg roll, and we spoke to people who were inside when it happened and they said that things were very calm and they didnt know there was a started getting Text Messages from friends and family, and one guy said he noticed a guy running across the lawn with a machine gun and then the secret service and to quote him, he said he wasnt worried because he was in the safest backyard in america. So we have seen two lockdowns, but everyone is going about their day, and people who had tickets for the later easter egg rolls to see if they can get in and take part, some people were escorted out of the white house and missed their easter egg roll time. That is one of the awful fall outs from this kind of thing that impacts so many people who come here to visit. This was the easter egg roll day that typically goes on until 6 00. If you missed your time slot, you dont get to go back in unfortunately. Its an awful situation on what was otherwise a beautiful and reallyge a compelling interview from someone in the middle of this. Bruce . Reporter you heard the chief talk about the suspect, known to police, and apparently, they saw him drawing his weapon and they opened fire. A lot of visitors were down in the capitol Business Center inside. Among them was a young woman, a marriage therapist named catherine, and we had a chance to talk with her a bit ago. Tell me what you saw and heard and what you thought. I was inside the Visitors Center and going through security when there was a scramble of people running and screaming and police with guns drawn. And then there were a couple of other officers who said there were like 5 of us and they said get down off the wall and i heard two shots off my left and police were running in that direction, and then they said, okay. Well evacuate you now and they got five of us up and how to run up the walkway with police up on top of the walkway yelling we got you covered. Just keep running. So we ran up to the top and evacuated to across the street. Reporter you heard two shots . I heard 2. It was like a boomboom. It doesnt sound like a gun. It was like a boomboom. Reporter did you see anybody hurt . No, no. Im here with my colleague and he left all his belongings on the Security Belt when we left. He doesnt have anything. We were just hear as part of the California Association of marriage and family therapists representatives on the hill for two bills, so. Reporter er reporter terri fying. Very terrifying. You are just like a sitting target. Reporter one report is the alleged shooter is in custody. Good to know. Thank you. Reporter thank you. And we had an early report that one officer was hurt but it was corrected that no officers hurt, and she was there with her colleague, and at last check, he was still trying to get his cell phone, briefcase, and belongings back because they were still there at the screening. You can imagine how terrifying that was for the scores of visitors who were bruce, thank you, and one last thing real quick, bruce. Are they getting back to normal but the Visitors Center is closed . It was after hours now, and are there people still milling about . We dont see anyone directly behind you, but looking to see if anyone is even around. Reporter no. A lot of tourists were gathered around us, and they have all left. As i said, i dont know whether they were able to get their belongings back. At last check, they hadnt. But it was a beautiful spring day and people are Walking Around but nobody everybody is figuring out what happened. The word has gotten out quickly and theyre not so interested in a bunch of reporters standing around and doing live shots anymore. You hope this isnt the last image that sticks with them about their time here in washington. We know here this is a reality. But this is a beautiful city, a welcoming city, and we certainly hope thats not the lasting image that the families the world have about washington, d. C. From what i have seen on social media, some people visiting the capitol for the first time, this is their First Experience at visiting the capitol. I want to get you up to speed on what we know about the suspect. Over the last 10 minutes, now that we have his name confirmed, 57yearold larry dawson from antioch, tennessee, we are able to tell you a lot more about him in specific regards to an incident in october where he was arrested inside the house gallery. v2015 where mr. Dawson was in the gallery while congress was conducting business and he stood up and started shouting bible verses and disrupted the members of congress gathered below the gallery and loudly stated to congress he was, quote, a prophet of god. At that point, capitol Police Officers moved in and he tried to fight them off and was ultimately taken into custody and charged as a result with disrupting the normal business in the capitol. And that occurred, and then on the 23rd, she was he was charged with an assault on the Police Officer and unlawful conduct on Capitol Grounds and was ordered to stay away from all the places he was today, ordered to stay away. He was pleading not guilty and he failed to appear in court in november and wrote a all right in december in a warrant was issued for his arrest. Thats right, and then he wrote a letter to court saying i am not going to show up and called himself a minister and a prophet of god and said he was not going to comply with the court order or surrender himself. So when the chief had said they d recent contact with him, it was back in october. As far as we know, that was the last correspondence, between the court and the suspect, january 5. Thats what they took the letter from him saying i am not going to comply 1not is going to surrender. The suspects vehicle is surrendered. They will be issuing a search warrant for this. And we have been watching all the events go down around there. What do you know. Reporter lesli, its quitting time at the capitol and the areas are emptying out. The Police Vehicles have sort of had to move to keep traffic they are taking a wide berth around the car and really, no as the officers wait for a search warrant to come through. Its a silver 1500 series ram pickup with tennessee plates, obviously, matching the suspect who we now is from tennessee, and im getting signaled out of the way as the security vehicles continue to move around that truck and police are just getting into place and there is frankly, not much more that they can do. They are letting people on foot move fairly closely past it and the media also, and its suggesting that they dont think its a Security Threat but something to keep a close eye on for evidentiary purposes and see what evidence they can get out of the truck as soon as they can get warrant. All right. Thank you, and well check back with you as warranted. We continue with our coverage of the shooting outside the capitol Visitors Center this afternoon that disrupted things for many people visiting in the city. We are live on capitol hill for updates on how thin shaping up right now. Reporter well, things are slowly returning back to normal. If not, almost. There are streets and walkways closed off, and the street corners are sat saturating the area, and its far from moral for the normal for the folks visiting the area. We spoke with a family visiting from utah who just entered the Visitors Center and were standing in the hallway trying to figure out what to do next when they started seeing capitol Police Officers run by in somewhat of a hurry, somewhat of a panic. Thats when they knew something was going on. Before they could do anything, leave the area they said they were shuffled in with dozens of other people into a separate room and told to basically stay really not knowing what was going on, and the scariest part was the uncertainty and they were in for about an hour and its an uncertain situation. They did mention that Capitol Police did continue to update them on the Little Information that they had to keep them in the loop and let them know what was going on.
