Confirmation hearings for chuck hagel begin this morning on capitol hill in front of the Senate Armed Services committee. President obama nominated the former nebraska senator as the next u. S. Defense secretary. His confirmation process is expected to be somewhat contentious, more so than senator john kerry for secretary of state. Delia goncalves is live in our satellite center. She has more on hagels battle as he goes before the senate. Good morning, delia. Reporter good morning. It will be a fiery hearing on the hilda. Senator kerry breezed through his confirmation process. It wont be as easy for senator chuck hagel, mainly because of his past comments that are literally coming back to haunt him. The 66yearold vietnam veteran says his views have been distorted but his critics, and there are lots of them, say it shows a deep misunderstanding of the issues, including israeliu. S. Relations. Some comments have been seen as propalestine, even as a justification for terrorism. The senator has even been seen as antigay. But his colleagues, including republican senator john coryn from texas are not buying his apology. I realize senator hagel is now repudiating many of his past actions and statements, but weve seen this before, unfortunately. Individuals approaching the confirmation process undergoing a seaming transformation. But this sudden and convenient transformation beggars belief. He has not undergone an ideological makeover. He just wants to win approval from members of this chamber in what we might call a confirmation conversion. Reporter coming up at 6 00, ill let you know 6 30 rather, ill leapt you know how hagel is fighting back and ill let you know how hagel is fighting back and who is on his side. Thank you, delia, live in our satellite center. Yesterday on capitol hill, former congresswoman Gabriel Giffords delivered emotional testimony during a hearing on gun control. C. s meat week. Its barbecue time howard here with your weather first. Were getting rid of the rain but colder air is moving in and lots of wind today. We could have gusts to 50 miles an hour with a wind advisory till 6 00. Temperatures fairly steady from 39 to 49. On the northbound side of i 95, some delays now as you travel into woodbridge. Then again here at route 644 to the beltway. No issues on 395. But on the gw parkway, watch out for high standing water basically between the Memorial Bridge and the 14th street bridge. More on area roads coming up in my next report. Back to you, mike. So were talking about barbecue and we cant stop talking about it because its fantastic. It is meat week in d. C. The national holiday. I think its 26 cities. One of the cities is d. C. Of course. Joining us now is Steve Adelson from carnivore bark cue. I said where do i find carnivore bark cue and you said everywhere. We have three trucks in washington, d. C. Im getting ready to open in baltimore. Were trying to get our great food out to everyone. What do we have in front of us . This would be our signature dish. This is our smoked beef brisket. It takes anywhere from 16 to 22 hours from start to finish. Oh, wow. Whats the coating on it . This is called we put a rub. Whats created in the smoking process is it creates a bark on the outside. And thats where you have the most intense you have the most fat up here and fat and smoke means flavor. It creates taste. Yes. So its just like that. Incredible carrization that takes carmelization that takes place in bacon, thats where you get a lot of that aroma from. It creates that reduction, delicious luscious, delicious quality. In addition to the beef, you do several other dishes. We do pulled pork, smoked loaded beans. Weve done smoked goat. You name it. Anything thats long, slow, tough meat, it ends up being delicious want it is gets out of the smoker. You running any specials for meat week . Going to extra places . Meat week were doing a competition at Living Social. Its going to be our signature dish. This brisket right here and our pulled pork. Then our amazing loaded smoked baked beans. Can we plate up one while were chatting here . Can we build a sandwich . Absolutely. And of course the gorgeous Barbecue Sauce which should be at every meal, no matter what it is, in my opinion. Whats the difference between i know this is going to sound funny but you have pulled pork. Is there such a thing as pulled beef brisket or is it usually always in slices . You can do it either way. The reality is the meat itself will dictate whether its going to be a slice, how thick a slice its going to. If its a tough piece of meat, you might cut it a little thinner. If it ends up being a very soft luscious piece of meat, thats when it ends up being almost like a pulled pork. Again, its the cut of meat itself, the particular meat is going to dictate what it ends up being. Were just about ready to toss it to howard. Im going to steal a piece while hes getting this ready. How much time, lauren . About 20 seconds. Well get this together. This is our memphis sauce, our sweet. Do you like spicy . Yeah. This is our mustard. Ill give it a try. As i take a big bite, ill be tossing it over you to. Ill save you some. We want to bring you some breaking news.
