Down in southern maryland, maybe just a couple of hours but its going to take maybe toward 8 00, 9 00 and areas just north and west of d. C. Could be 10 00 to noonish as you head up to the pennsylvania border but this afternoon looks mild, sunshine returning, dry and breezy. Well crack 50 in spots. Wow. The trouble is going to be this morning. Coming up from upper Montgomery County, a significance difference from clarksburg, even down toward Montgomery Village there was a big difference in that part of the drive on 270 about two hours ago. So we have the rain and freezing rain this morning. By noon most of this is gone. Well start to see some sun moving in from the west. High today 50, 51, maybe 52. Yes, it is going to get that mild with low 40s again by 8 00 p. M. If you can delay something as opposed to canling, there wont be any weather problems for the afternoon. Heavy snow up in pennsylvania. Weve got sleet and freezing rain and then plain old rain. Quite a break now to our south. Southern maryland quiet at the moment. Down 95 quiet. But theres more moisture coming in out of west virginia. Everywhere thats pink, that is freezing rain. The purple colors are more of a sleet mix here. You see some of the light freezing rain returning to Montgomery County and fairfax counties. As far as totals they range from a light glaze in the immediate metro. About a tenth of anism or more. Two en inch or more. Twotenths in purcelville. You see up 270 and 70, these are the areas especially the side roads, you just dont want to be on right now even into west virginia, romney, paw paw. Lots of very slick, slick travel. Warnings to the north, advisories here. Theyll be expiring from 6 00 a. M. South to 1 00 p. M. Near the pennsylvania border. We have temperatures right around 30, 33, 34. Overnight i was speaking to all the traffic people that were monitoring the roads overnight. They said in washington and frederick county, tons of accidents occurred, especially involved tractortrailers. The slipping and sliding, some jackknifed as well up on the northern end of our town. Now, closer in, you can see that the beltway looks okay but i can tell you coming out of my neighborhood, the road was shining and glittering from the ice. On the major thoroughfares it looked much, much better. It is icy. Just want to remind you the bridges and ramps freeze first. Use your low gear this morning. Avoid sudden braking. Know before you go. Youre watching us. You also have our ipad app and our traffic feature on there. Im show you what that looks like later on. Dial 511 out on the roadways if you need to from your hands free phone for more road information. Now, down south in lusby, there was a very serious accident overnight clearing rowsb road at olivet road. I spoke to all the d. O. T. S yesterday afternoon to gauge what theyre going to do for today. Maryland state highway was out treating the roadways all day long yesterday, pretreating and then they were out in full force overnight as well. Theyre on standby on all the major thoroughfares. Same story with vdot. Well have more information coming up. Back to you. Monika gave us some good tips but if you do have to leave and have to drive today, it can cant take public transportation, edmonds. Com subjects doing suggests doing these things before going out. Run the air conditioning to remove the condensation if your windows. Make sure your gas tank is at least half full. That way you avoid gas line freezeup. Avoid using your parking brake in this type of weather and dont use Cruise Control when driving on a slippery surface. Make sure you can see out your window so check your lights and wiper fluid. Again, the temperature makes all the difference this morning. It is warmer here in the district. Crews also treated the roads overnight here. Conditions are not nearly as scary in d. C. In the city limits as they are elsewhere. The freezing rain coupled with the freezing temperatures can make driving extremely tricky this morning, especially for those of you driving to the north and west of the district. Kristin fisher is live in frederick with a glimpse. The conditions there. She joins us on the phone this morning. Good morning. Reporter hey, guys, good morning. Hopefully you will be seeing me soon but it took us a little longer to get out here than expected because we were doing exactly what youve been saying, driving really carefully. We were coming from d. C. Going up 270. I have to say on 270, i dont think the roadway is entirely clear, barely any slush on either of the shoulders to report. There were just tons of salt trucks and plows everywhere. It was really an impressive show of force by mdot. But the minute we got off 270, i mean the second we hit that ramp, it was a totally different story. Were now on the side road right off 270 in frederick. The minute you get out of the car, you are on a real slick surface, just ice everywhere. Any car that has been parked outside, drivers are going to have a very difficult time getting the doors open because they are now sealed shut with ice and it sounds like this will continue for at least a few more hours. Schools, government still open up here in frederick but i tell you what, the thing that im really going to be watching out for over the next few hours is just any sort of potential Power Outages. Any time were dealing with a sort of storm like this, the branches on trees get heavy from the ice. Theres a potential to fall down on power lines also have to watch as traffic picks up. Right now the roads are deserted. Its 4 00 a. M. , still a few hours away from rush hour. It could definitely get a bit more dicey. Main roads looking good but its the surface roads and the potential for Power Outages that im worried about this morning. Ill see you soon. Back to you. We hope to see you soon, Kristin Fisher reporting live on the road heading towards frederick. You might want to consider allowing extra time for this mornings commute because that freezing rain that kristin was telling you about are sure to slow things down. Were trying to check things out throughout the region. We have Team Coverage this morning. First alert meteorologist erica grow is driving around leesburg, virginia checking out the conditions there so far this morning. Over to you. Reporter all right, mike. Well i did pull over. Were on route 7 in leesburg and we pulled over to a sunoco station so that i could take a look at the ice thats on everything. And it is on everything. If the road has not been treated with salt, it is definitely frozen right now. Im looking at what appears to be like a holly bush basically right here with this sunoco station. Its coated with about a quarter inch of ice and ice hanging down as well. Everything is coated. Looks like a quarter inch, maybe even a little bit more of ice. Part of the problem we have out here is that the rain is falling very, very light. I would call it drizzle right now. So if its heavier rain, sometimes that can give it an opportunity to melt some of the ice and wash it away but its just very, very light rain, its continuing to freeze as it touches different surfaces. You definitely want to be careful as youre walking out on the sidewalks this morning. The roads themselves are totally fine. We were on the beltway briefly and of course weve been on route 7 for quite a while. That was totally fine. So looks like the crews out here did a good job. Pretreating the roads. Of course side streets might be a totally different story. So be very careful as youre heading out in the neighborhoods before you get to those major arteries. Right now were live in leesburg, im meteorologist erica grow. Back over to you. Thank you, erica. Erica was saying looking at the trees you could see in the morning coming in along with the salt trucks, trees were glistening with the ice glaze. In prince georges county, they only have a half day scheduled so theres no delay today. Ititplanning to head out, remember, those bridges, ramps and overpasses can be slippery. I know that all the different d. O. T. S were focusing on those first yesterday. You want to use your low gear, avoid sudden breaking, know before you go such as watching us and dial 511 when out on the roads if you need more road information. Andrea, back to you.
