More than half of the women who could get a treatment for the deadly cancer are not getting it. Dr. Max gomez here with this story. Ovarian cancer is deadly because it causes few symptoms early on. So its often at an advanced stage when it is found. Thats why there are 14,000 deaths from Ovarian Cancer every year. A special double dose of chemo could help significantly. Reporter while battling Ovarian Cancer, Terrys Backyard was her sanctuary. Diagnosed at stage 3, she took comfort here as she braced for a long battle with cancer. Just a few months after treatment began, her doctor had good news. At that point he said it looks like everything is good. Not only do patients get an iv dose but also a followup dose directly in the abdomen. A new study shows this dual approach pushes the threeyear survival rate to 81 in advanced cases, a 10point jump. The bad news, it found six of the largest Academic Medical Centers only 41 of women got it. Why are there such wide variations at large academic National Comprehensive Cancer Network hospitals in what is probably the best therapy for parents . Not that long ago less than one half of women who were diagnosed with advanced Ovarian Cancer were alive only two to three years. Thats why its so important. Reporter one of the reasons the approach may be underutilized is because some patients may assume more chemo means more side effects, which isnt necessarily true. It makes sense to think you put the chemo right in to where the cancer was. I think thats just brilliant. Reporter the dual chemo approach is used after surgery in advanced Ovarian Cancer. Even though side effects can be worse with this technique, not always. In some modifications, the abdominal chemo can lessen those problems. Time to check in with lonnie quinn in your exclusive cbs forecast. The picture outside currently is a good one. Hazy but mostly sunny. 87 degrees. New york city s High Temperature was 89. Did not find 90 degrees in new york city. What does that mean . No heat wave for the city. No heat wave so far this summer. Inland areas did find the 90degree mark today. Newark is basically melting. Youve had eight days in a row where youve had 90 degrees or more. Thats a good long run as far as the heat wave goes. As far as tomorrow, i dont think its going to continue. Heres the reason why. Model numbers are indicating that we should be getting in to the upper 80s tomorrow. Close around newark. Just think its going to be an 88 or 89 for you. Heres the reason why. The front that came through our area today, put down a big rain on the east end of long island, a little bit of that left over weather is still up around southern massachusetts in to the coast of maine. What were dealing with now is behind the front you always get is textbook stuff. Those winds shift. Theyre no longer southwest. Now they become northwest. Not a real cold breeze. Should be enough to bring the temperatures down by a smidge and say from that 90degree mark for newark today down to 88 or so and then you look out here out around the state of kansas and that wet weather gives us the possibility for rain on thursday night in to friday. But i want you to notice how the models are trending currently. You get in to your wednesday, were looking okay. Then you get in to your day thursday. This is it right there. See how its trending well south of us. This is the first model run that takes it that far south. I still think its too close to discount. I would need two model runs in a row before im going to start giving that a lot of credence. This has got me scratching my head saying hey, this was yesterday thought to be our storm. Now its going southwest. As of right now thats a good sign for us because things are trending drier for that friday, saturday period. For tomorrow, less humid. Could possibly see a popup shower here or there. 85 degrees. Rain is not a big part of the forecast tomorrow. Its more of the nice weather. I think its going to be the best day of the week and across the board youre 85 on your day wednesday. We just chatted about that. On thursday, 82. Thursday is trending drier now. I think bulk of your day thursday could be okay. If that system makes a move to the north as it was indicating yesterday, you would see more clouds later thursday and a rain chance develop late thursday night. Friday would be the day where showers are possible. Im keeping them in for the time being. I need a little bit more data to support that system going down to say virginia or so.
