The accident started in the northbound lanes. One box truck trying to pass another when they bumped at high speed and one lost control jumping the divider into the oncoming tractor trailer. Its a complex accident scene in a really bad spot. Reporter evidence spread over hundreds of yards of pavement on a friday afternoon where that corridor is very heavy. Most of the traffic is being diverted. Its one behind the other. Nobody moving for two hours. Reporter state police tried to turn southbound thruway motorists around but ended up filtering on to local streets to get past the wreck. The Ripple Effect lasted all afternoon. 17 is a dead stop. Reporter how long have you been stuck . Four hours. Going from suffern to spring valley. Reporter how long is it taking you. An hour and a half. Reporter and youre not there yet . No. Youre still in suffern, you know. Yeah. Reporter thousands were caught in it but the frustration vanished once they saw the cause. This truck driver missed all his appointments but managed to be grateful. I was mad when i saw this because i was running late. I had a bad day. But now, you know, thinking about it, its just sad because this a guy is dead. He is not going to be able to make it to his family. Reporter it turns out that man, that driver, and his partner were both killed in that truck. The families have not been notified so we dont have the names. The driver of the tractor trailer miraculously survived. He is in serious but stable condition and police are questioning the driver of the box truck that was in the northbound lane that had an encounter with that truck that leapt over and the passenger and driver of a passenger car, as well. Local School Officials are scrambling to find a place for students next week after an explosion rocked a High School Complex last night. Theres also some new blast. Bronx. Reporter inspectors spent the day searching through High School Campus on terrence avenue after last nights explosion rocked the neighborhood. What did you hear . What did it sound like . Oh, its whoo it was like a earthquake. You know . It was the floor was shaking, you know, we all ran because we was all scared. Reporter three contractors now recovering in the burn unit with severe injuries from the explosion. They had been doing construction in the science labs on the sixth floor. Mayor bill de blasio says one of those workers lit a match to test the gas line and this prompted the blast. The investigation. Dont pretend to be an expert but i dont believe this was standard procedure. I believe this was a mistake. Reporter the building has extensive damage and it goes science lab. Multiple levels have been affected and classes are supposed to start september 9. Earlier today, Carmen Farina the chancellor of new York City Schools told us, classes should begin on time. All is under control. We fully expect the school will be opening on time. Reporter now the mayor says thats not the case and the department of education is scrambling to find a solution. Jfk building will not be day of school. Done. But we are going to have a location nearby for each and every student in the building so they can start school on time at a different location. Reporter that means, 3,000 students will feel the impact. There are 7 different schools on this campus. And now they will have to be relocated to other schools for the beginning of the year. We will never allow students to go back into a building thats not totally safe. So right now, we are concentrating on fixing those three floors and investigating the cause of the issue. Reporter at this point its unclear how long it will take to fix the damage. Right now the department of ed is working on a relocation plan for the students. In the marble hill section of the bronx ilana gold, cbs 2 news. Two Charter Schools were supposed to start classes today and monday. They are relocated to other schools and will be in classes next week. Scratched and bitten over a subway seat. Tonight police are searching for a rider who attacked eye woman on the f train attacked a woman on the f train in queens. Cbs 2s matt kozar has more. Reporter we are all familiar with road rage but do you know about subway rage . Well, competition especially during rush hour is fierce for those seats and police say right here at this subway station, one commuter went berserk when another woman asked her to move her bag off of her seat. Reporter the victim snapped the photo of the police say this woman pushed, scratched and bit another subway rider who tried to sit in a seat that had her bag on it. Beat somebody up over a pocketbook . Thats terrible. Reporter it happened last friday at 9 45 a. M. On a manhattanbound f train from queens. Police say the 45yearold victim asked this woman to move her bag so she could sit down. When the victim tried to sit down, the woman went into a rage she pushed the victim, pulling her hair, scratching her chest and biting her forearm causing her to bleed. Cops say the attacker took off when the train stopped at the 21st street and queensbridge station. That was terrible it was terrible. Reporter the victim is expected to be okay. Police say if you recognize that woman, please call detectives. Live from queens, matt kozar, cbs 2 news. A developing story now out of france. A gunman opened fire on a high speed train traveling from amsterdam to paris. Three people were wounded, two of them critically. A french official says the gunman, identified as a 26 yearold moroccan was subdued by two american passengers and one of those americans was seriously wounded. The suspect was taken into custody after the train stopped in northern france. The attack took place though through belgium. Jerry nadler is backing deal. In a statement he said that the agreement, quote, gives us the best chance of stopping iran from developing a nuclear weapon. Personal appeal from the president and in the face of serious pressure on jewish lawmakers to oppose the deal. Nadler is the first jewish lawmaker from new york to support the deal. Police have charged a 14 year old boy for a violent robbery in harlem on august 2. It was caught on camera on west 138th street. Reporter Terrence Harris was lucky standing very close to one of several buildings hit by air gunfire along 23rd street in chelsea. Someone targeted shops and apartments firing pellets and bibis along a stretch of 23rd and 7th and 8th avenues last week. Roberto perez is the superintendent of one of the buildings. They shot four or five times. They had a hole here. A chip here. A chip here. And the bottom. That was like four shots. Reporter he had to replace the glass. We had to put plywood and cover it up because it was ready to collapse. Reporter perez told us that he feels the shots came from the Chelsea Hotel across the street currently under renovation. The fact that one of these air guns shootings occurred not under the cover of darkness but in broad daylight concerns local residents. I have been here over 21 years and i have never had this type of incident happen here so it is disturbing because it is someone with a gun. Its surprising. We have lived on this block for 12 years and nothing like that happened before. Reporter these shootings have some worried, could it happen again . Im kind of worried. So if it was just sun exposure you would expect it to be all skins cancers increased and this was just the melanoma increase.
