Moving west with a northwest component to the path and by the time you get to sunday, somewhere we think off the florida coast, now it could very well be into the gulf. We dont know yet. We have to watch the cone but it is forecast to become a category 1 hurricane at that point. When this system moves over places like hispaniola or puerto rico, mountainous terrain it gets beat up and it holds on to a Tropical Storm veteran. Once it gets to the bahamas strength, once it gets to the bahamas its flat and the water is shallow and warm and thats where we think well have a category 1 hurricane. We are going to watch this. 84 for your day tomorrow. 82 on thursday. Its that nice weather im talking about. 83 on friday. All of that with a pretty sky, low humidity, the weekend okay, beach weekend. Sky looks pretty. We are going to bump the temperature and humidity up as well up close to 90. The next three days it will feel nice. All right. Thank you, lonnie. You bet, guys. Its a city landmark we havent seen for years. But tonight, we are peeling back the layers to give you a peek at the new st. Patricks cathedral. And then at 6 00 lawn bowling takes over central park. What is it . Well explain. That major renovation at st. Patricks cathedral is almost complete. Crews are putting the finishing touches on the Landmark Church just in time for the popes visit next month. Cbs 2s elise finch has the tour. Reporter after nearly four years, the scaffolding has been removed from st. Patricks cathedral. Inside and out. Theres very little evidence of the multiphase renovation thats nearly complete. A beautiful place inside. You walk outside you get blinded without sunglasses. Its gorgeous. Reporter every inch of the building has been restored. Decades of dirt was removed. Every pew removed sanded and restrained. Each stained glass window thoroughly cleaned. The churchs purpose is to let the grace and light of gods word and life shine forth in a very colorful way. Stained glass windows personify that and now that does it, right . Now look the sun coming through. Reporter Cardinal Dolan led a tour. Like so many other things here, the fragile century old silk and wool articles were taken down, cleaned and restored. We have to take the organ apart to do the restoration so we took every sing the pipe out and every, single pipe out and they measure from 37 feet talk to threequarters inch. Reporter theres still construction work happening here at st. Patricks cathedral. But we are told that overall the restoration project is ahead of schedule and on budget. Its like a landmark and, you know, the money to keep it going and keep it in Great Condition for as long as. Reporter most are thrilled with the renovation and some are critical wondering if some of the money could have kept their neighborhood churches from closing. They should have spread it around the community. Yes, because we need the church open. I think that criticism might have a little bit of validity if this was about luxury. And if were about embellishing a cathedral. This is about pretty basic repair. In other words if we didnt do the safety and the future of the cathedral is at risk. Reporter the 175 million restoration was scheduled for completion in december of this year. The timetable was moved up for the popes visit and we are told everything will be ready when the uponnive arrives next month. The one thing that wont be finished is the Geothermal Heating system so theres no Construction Material on fifth avenue. But there is still plenty on 50th and 51st street. In addition to visiting st. Patricks cathedral the pope will address the u. N. General assembly, attend a service at the 9 11 memorial and museum, go to a school in harlem and say mass at Madison Square garden. See coverage of the visit on cbsnewyork. Com and cbs 2. Not a big fan of grandeur, right . No. He is not. A little bit of irony there but they got it done. Otherwise, like the cardinal said, it would have been in ruins. Thats right. Thats it for us here at 5 00. Well see you again at 11 00. The news at 6 00 starts right now. Linda macdonald is captioning for you in real time. A fatal mistake. A worker killed at a west side construction site. The error investigators say he made that led to his death. A bicyclist speeding on a shared path on the hudson river plows into a toddler and keeps going. Now the search for the cyclist. Robbed while sleeping, a string of breakins on long island while the homeowners are in bed. And helping with school work. Why it might not be such a good idea. How you could be giving your child math anxiety
