Gurgaon: Students of Class XII expressed apprehension over the CBSE’s 30:30:40 formula to evaluate them. Many of them dubbed “unfair” the board’s decision to give 60% weightage to the marks obtained in classes X and XI.
“It’s not fair. It appears we are being primarily evaluated for classes X and XI instead of Class XII. Even if the board wanted to include the performance of the previous years, it should have been the other way round — 60% weightage to Class XII performance and 20% each to classes 10 and 11,” said Arunima Singh, who studies science at Salwan Public School.
Some students questioned the rationale behind taking into account the performance of previous years at all. They said they had taken subjects of their choice in Class XI to improve their performance, an option they did not have in Class X. “At the beginning of this year, we were told we need to perform well in our internal assessments because in case the final exams get cancelled, our results will depend on the tests. The pandemic year was both emotionally and physically challenging. So, we ensured we took each assignment as our board exams. But it seems this wasn’t enough. Why should my performance depend on the marks I got in Class X when the subjects are different in Class XII?” asked Kaityani Singh, a student of Heritage Xperiential Learning School.
