New at 5 30, the number of drones flying dangerously close to airports keeps growing, and that has senator Chuck Schumer calling for drone makers to use technology to keep them from getting near planes, taking off and landing. Checkey beckford is at Laguardia Airport to explain how this will work. Reporter and rob, the technology is called geo fencing that would erect a virtual fence. As you guys mentioned, there have been at least seven sightings by pilots of drones at area airports. So senator Chuck Schumer is proposing legislation that would force the faa to require manufacturers to install geo fencing software inside all drones, and taking the option to fly near airplaneses out of the hands of drone operators. There has been a huge spike in the number of drones spotted at or near airports, and all of 2004, there were only about 238 drone sightings by pilots. So far this year alone that number has more than doubled with more than 650 sightings so far. The concern, that a drone could get sucked into a planes engine or slam into the windshield. Flying a drone near an airplane could lead to jail time. The faa has not responded to schumers proposed legislation. It has said it needs more time to study the issue before proposing legislation. Live outside of Laguardia Airport, checkey beckford, news 4 new york. A hot topic lately, checkey, thanks
