well good friday morning. people in several american communities waking up to widespread damage from severe weather. >> one of those storms producing whipping winds, strong enough to topple a school. >> people in the town say it happened fast. a person was inside that school when the roof was ripped off. this morning she's talking about that terrifying moment. overnight mother nature's fury on full display. >> for real. >> what appears to be a large tornado forming over hamburg, pennsylvania. >> look outside. >> moments later a nearby elementary school is leveled. >> what was there this morning is out here somewhere in the field. >> this morning book, black p blackboards and desks now visible from the sidewalk. the roof and walls gone. in it was raining. the lights went out and then there was a bang. >> the school's principal was inside when it happened. pieces of insulation still stuck in her hair. >> although i was thinking we don't have a ceiling light. why am i seeing daylight. >> with classes beginning in six weeks the school just had major renovations. >> i'm really sad. that was our school. >> further west line of storms sending trees crashing into power lines in mt. vernon, kentucky. and in missouri homes and businesses forced to evacuate as relentless rain continues to showers along the gulf coast but the strong storms will continue for the central midwest and the rockies. turn now to the historic day in south carolina. after years of bitter debate the confederate flag is coming down this morning. >> that's right with a stroke of a pen, the governor cleared the way for the flag that's flown for more than 50 years to be removed from the grounds of the state capitol. with more here's abc's stephanie ramos. >> reporter: this morning, a symbol of the old south will fly over south carolina's capitol grounds for the last time. >> it is a great day. >> reporter: south carolina's governor nikki haley ordering the removal of the confederate flag from the statehouse grounds by 10:00 this morning. this significant, the final step toward the end of an extensive and combative battle. at the sign the families of the nine killed in what police call an act of racial hatred at an historic black church in charleston. >> the action of nine individuals laid out this long chain of events that forever showed the state of south carolina what love and forgiveness looks like. >> reporter: the pictures of the alleged gunman holding the confederate flag revived the conversation over this battle symbol. >> sometimes it takes a horrific depiction for us to really grasp the graft of the situation. >> reporter: supporters of the flag gathered on statehouse grounds to fight for what they believe is right. >> disappointed that it's coming down because i firmly believe it's coming down for all the wrong reasons. >> reporter: as the debate wrapped up in south carolina it unexpectedly exploded in washington when house minority leader nancy pelosi tried to force a vote to we move all flags inspired by the confederate symbol from the u.s. capitol. the vote bailed and house speaker john boehner called it a cheap political stunt. back over to you, reena and t.j. >> stephanie, thanks so much. the fbi chief says there were plans for terror attacks here in the u.s. and its agencytoed them. he gives a big part of credit to the recent arrests of isis sympathizers in new jersey ohio and elsewhere. pierre thomas with the details. >> reporter: fbi director james comey told reporters about a dozen alleged isis sympathizers were arrested in the weeks leading up to july 4th. he said some had deadly intentions quote, i do believe our work disrupted efforts to kill people. some of them were focused on the fourth of july. comey declined to give specific targets but among those arrested this college student accused of casing the george washington bridge. when agents searched his apartment they found plans for a pressure cooker bomb like the ones used in the boston marathon attacks. the fbi says it was and is a dangerous situation. the new normal pierre thomas, abc news, washington. and another deadline is passing for the u.s. and other world powers. negotiating a nuclear deal with iran. secretary of state john kerry threatening to walk away from talks in vienna if conditions not met. iran firing back accusing the u.s. and europe of back-tracking on key commitments. among the sticking point, how to limit and monitor iran's nuclear program and how and when sanctions should be lifted. the greek parliament votes today on the government's new plan to solve its debt crisis. faced with an you willultimatum, the prime minister gave in to most of the demands and creditors. it includes tax increases and penguins cuts which greek voters rejected. calls for a nearly $60 billion bailout. if parliament approves european leaders will then consider the plan during emergency meetings this week. well they might be taking their show on the road. two former u.s. presidents were all charm after taking center stage last night. >> former presidents bush and clinton held a discussion in dallas. it was part of the presidential leadership scholars program. the current presidential race was only briefly mentioned. they traded jabs and shared a lot of laughs. >> when you meet these scholars you can't be pessimistic about the future of the country. these are fine people who, you know just inspire hope. clinton and i are getting a little long in the tooth these days. >> this is the one month of the with office they have been good buds. fun to see this relationship develop. the organizers are finalizing preparations for today's ticker tape parade right here in new york honoring the u.s. women's of smelly too so a little bit longer than they expected to be out there, but generally in good shape. >> experts say the sisters did all the right things to survive in the rugged back country except for one crucial thing. they didn't tell anyone where they planned to hike. >> new insight into the cause of this week's fiery collision between a freight train and truck in new york. this is dash cam video you're seeing. it shows the crossing gate was not working. video was taken from another truck near the railroad crossing. the gate stays up and its lights do not flash. truckers say that's been an ongoing problem there with a lot of close calls. there are only minor injuries in this crash. a terrifying close call at an amusement park in wisconsin. a 13-year-old boy and family friend were strapped in a ride called the catapult but seconds before they were about to be shot into the air, the bungee cord snapped. it hit the ground so hard it left a hole four inches deep but no one was hurt. park operators blame it on mechanical failure. two firefighters in arkansas are entering a burning home trying to save a mother and baby. seconds afterwards a backdraft blows out the insulation from the house. firefighters were not seriously hurt. the mother and baby though had escaped the home before the firefighters had even arrived. no word on the cause of this fire. it sure looks as if this toronto landmark was on fire. smoke engulfing the cn tower. where there was smoke there was not fire. it was just a rehearsal of fireworks for the opening ceremony of today's pan am games. organizers say they had given advance notice but there was more smoke than expected. mischievous monkey is on the loose at the memphis zoo. the 3-year-old samed zim escaped her enclosure and weighs about 15 pounds and is said to be absolutely harmless. zookeepers believe zim is sleeping in a pipe drain so they're patiently waiting for her to come out hopefully sooner than later. >> escaped?
