coming up on "action news," fire strikes a nine-story apartment building in the spring garden section of philadelphia. and nasa celebrates remarkable pictures from pluto next. ♪ "action news," delaware valley's leading news program with jim gardner. wednesday night, and the big story on "action news" tonight is developing news from the spring garden section of philadelphia. police and firefighters responded tonight to an apartment fire at broad and mount vernon. and live at the scene is dann cuellar. what is the story there? >> the residents have now been allowed to return to their apartments, after a little scare at 640 broad street a nine-story apartment building. an "action news" viewer sent us this footage showing flames and ambers coming from the roof. around 9:00 the smoke alarm and strobes went off after someone reported smoke from the air conditioning vents. and the firefighters responded to check out what was going on from the roof. more from residents. >> i was in my part and the alarm went off. >> we were sitting in the apartment and the alarm went off. it is usually a false alarm but i looked outside and the fire trucks were here. >> you grabbed your cats? >> yes, there are two cats in there. we have to kind of put them all in there. >> they are ok thank goodness huh? >> they are not happy, but hopefully we can go back in soon. >> they are back in and looked earlier today in margate at winchest efr and grand view avenues. and serious rain caused flash flooding in many shore communities. and "action news" also on long beach island where it looked more like the river. and fortunately it receded by late afternoon. a man with long blond hair with a black flyers hat held up this center city t.d. bank. they gave the teller a demand note and fled with cash. the f.b.i. called in to investigate. a home security camera showing this armed home invasion. first one man and then three more tried to push it inside. and the homeowner watched it on his security system and chad pradelli, you have the latest here. >> investigators continue to look for the suspects and are getting some tips because of the video. the surveillance systems exploded in recent years and helped investigators. many do not register it with the philadelphia police department which is urging people to do so under the safe cam program. the surveillance of an attempted home invasion in west mount airy. and it is in color and clear, and they try to track down the individuals. recorded on the homeowner's system. >> i would say within an hour i already received tips with names location. it gives us something to run on. >> the surveillance system was not registered with the safe cam program that was launched in 2011. and they say 1,000 systems were registered by businesses and homes, and 3300 exterior and 2800 interior cameras. >> i have helped to identify everyone from armed robbers to graffiti artists and in between. >> last year put out 650 videos or so. out of those probably 150 arrests and close to 300 investigations were cleared. >> today in the 500 block of burnham where this video was recorded, the representative of the security company adt was going door to door. they charge $30 to $60 a month to monitor the cameras. >> and they can get a free security review it don't cost anything. >> and nowadays you can even go to lowes for the do it yourself system for a couple of hundred dollars. >> the police say that the city commerce department will help to subsidize some systems for businesses. they need to be registered with safe call. if ever to stop it. >> this is a dream of all scientists. >> each day scientists test alzheimer's-damaged brains looking for key issues in the lab at the university of pennsylvania. researchers, dr. virginia lee and dr. john led the way as part of a group of experts. they discovered that proteins get misfolded causes information get spread from cell to cell. and knowing that it may be possible to stop the cell-to-cell spread. >> we target it and figure out a way to either unfold it or snag it with antibodies and throw it in the trash can. >> if they succeed with theories on mice it may lead to a human application. even if they swap it for five years it could effectively be a cure for alzheimer's. and a retired scientists who now has alzheimer's would love to see that happen. >> it's a very,
