There are so many issues to think about in preparation for the popes visit in september and in this day and age, expanding cell service in the area of the parkway is certainly one of them. Action News Reporter john rawlins is live along the parkway tonight. John, we have been saying about a million and a half people are come to the parkway. That means a million and a half smartphones as well. Reporter think about it, jim, when they start texting and tweeting and skyping and posting videos en masse its going to stress the system that weve all come to rely on more and more. For instance, the live picture youre looking at right now doesnt get back to channel six by satellite. Instead, it uses a device here in the action news van right here that is connected through multiple connections to the cellular system. Near Logan Square Justin was using his phone today. Checking email and making a phone call, yeah. No issues. Reporter no problems because there was only a routine number of cell phone users along the parkway. But during the papal visit a million plus people could crowd this space at the same time. Using their smartphones and or tablets and whether they want to share the event on social media or texting or phone calls, this is a challenge. Reporter the concern, the demand could overwell existing towers. Part of the solution an upgrade including three dozen small towers like this one being installed across from the library. Both verizon and at t say they have studied usage at past mass events from new years at times square to welcome america. What we did was project that usage into what we knew or what we could assume was going to happen on the parkway next month. Reporter the goal, to quadruple existing capacity in parts of center city. The price tag 47 million. Such costs not a factor the last time such crowds gathered here during the 1979 visit of Pope John Paul ii. Cell phones were still experimental. 36 years later, they are everywhere. It is our expectation that when you press send, that call or that data session is going to go through. Reporter the intent to provide full Cellular Service during the visit unlike the popes january visit to the philippines. There service was reportedly switched off at times because of government fears a signal could trigger an explosive device. They were testing some of the new towers today. They also planned to bring in some temporary towers that are affectionately known as cows short for cell o wheels. The goal is to provide service for however many people ends up showing up. It will be a big crowd we know that. Live on the art museum steps, john rawlins channel6 action news. Jim. Thank you, john. Reporter jim, the potential is huge and that is why they are getting ready. Radnor township is bracing for double trouble. This is the only location that has not one but two septa stations that will be used by people going in to see the pope. The the word to the motoring public is have patience much everybody is going the need to have patience throughout this week coming and going. Reporter 10,000 people will be coming and going from the radnor train station both saturday and sunday. Compare that with the 600 passengers a day during the average work week. And thousands will also be using the villanova stop on the norristown high speedline. The stations are just a mile apart and traffic and parking will be a hassle. Essentially its to mitigate the traffic that will be coming into the township to get to those people to the train stations in a very safe and efficient manner. Reporter Villanova University is canceling classes on friday the 25th and saturday the 26th. That will open up the huge parking lot along lancaster avenue for people headed to see the pope. Parking will be much tighter around the paoli train station in tredyffrin township. The only other stop in the western suburbs. Merchants worry about the congestion. I know its going to be a little crazy and chaotic but i feel like they have total control over who is going to be coming in and out, making sure its patrons versus people just trying to park here. Reporter Tredyffrin Township Police are still working on the parking logistics. They would like you to hitch a ride to the station, if you can. And well have a pattern set up where they can very systemically come in, drop someone off and kind of be on their way. Reporter it will be all handson deck for police in both townships. I plan to literally be living here for about three or four days. My command staff will be doing that as well and so will my officers. Lots of confidence going into the sports cast. A knock against sam bradford not me, sam bradford is that he cant stay healthy and his completion percentage but eagles quarterback feels great and offensive quarter coordinator pat shurmur says as far as completions it takes two to tango. Bradford feels great and go figure his health seems to be the least of the concerns out there. Its the others who people are concerned about. Forget about that but getting back to you and your baseball skills, if you want to see that video it is still on my Facebook Page just saying. Love you jeff. Love you jim. Talking about sam bradford yes he looked great today especially in the red soap. Really poised. Made some great decisions out there and yeah hes healthy. The guy you have to worry about kiko alonzo who is still out with that concussion and what about Demarco Murray . This is a bit concerning. Murray was back from the illness that kept him out yesterday but he didnt do much of anything out there today. Neither did Mychal Kendricks or jack ertz held out with unspecified injuries. With no murray the heavy load at running back went to the forgotten man ryan matthews. Expect him to play a larger role in this offense than you think. He was a former first rounds pick. Matthews took reps returning kicks for the first time ever. He sales he doesnt care about the fact hes playing second fiddle to murray. Hes enjoying his time out here. Like i said everything is fast tempo and really from one session to another and you keep going until the practice is over. Your heart rate is up. Youre getting in shape and i think thats the best thing for us right now is to hit that first game running. Hes a real solid sturdy guy. Hes i wouldnt call him a downhill runner but i think because he has really good vision and he catches the ball well and he does a good job in pass protection so were glad to have him. Reporter Brandon Graham says he wants to have two sacks per game this year. It was pointed out that would be nine and a half more sacks than the nfl record. He says yes thats what i want to do. Try to get him in there four days a week if i can. You know, i might put chase at first base. Ill look at matchups when i get them and go from there and we got to get him at bats and ill do the best i can to try to do that. Aaron nola on the mound tonight. Finally if youve ever looked through the guinness book of World Records you may have come across some bizarre feats like the Largest Golf Club or this. In cincinnati for some reason at a reds game how about the man going for the longest throw of a washing machine . Yeah, here you go. Whew. Sean mccarthy throws the washing machine 15 feet 9inches breaking the world record by nearly 2 feet as we take another look. How in the world do they come up with these records . Watch this thing. No. Cecily tynan with the accuweather forecast when we continue in just a moment. Weekend accuweather forecast. Heres cecily tynan. Jim its going to be a gorgeous weekend. About as nice as you can get for august weather. Storm tracker6 live double scan showing that we are dry finally this afternoon the lingering showers moved off the coast and the action cam was taking a look in longport, new jersey, where you can see surf is up. If youre a boater bear in mind that we do have small craft advisories in effect for the delaware and jersey coasts into tomorrow night. Were looking at wind gusts up to about 25 knots thats 28 Miles Per Hour and the waves could be up to about 5 feet thanks to a storm system off shore that could cause a few problems as well as rip currents. Temperaturewise feels really nice. 85 degrees in philadelphia down from a high of 87 which is just 1 degree above the average high for this time of the year. Allentown 80. Trenton 82. Millville 81 and a little bit cooler down the shore avalon and the boardwalk currently 75 degrees. And dewpoints are pretty low. This time of the year you get dewpoints below 60 degrees its a very dry air mass with winds generally out of the northeast, out of canada and our dewpoints will remain on the low side right through the weekend. So, were looking at seasonable temperatures and low humidity. Satellite6 along with action radar showing the clouds cleared out very quickly in philadelphia this morning. Theyre still lingering though near Atlantic City and dover and we do have a few high thin clouds moving in across the poconos. These clouds all associated with a low pressure thats finally moving off the coast of virginia. Its going to be intensifying as it mover to the northeast. It wont bring any rain to our region but it will bring some lingering clouds down the shore and also a risk of some rip currents. You do really want to be careful if youre on the beaches this weekend. Next 12 hours though for this friday night mostly clear and seasonable, 59 degrees in the cooler suburbs, 68 degrees for center city. So a great night for sleeping and tomorrow well see a good amount of sunshine. This low pressure down to the south will bring a few morning clouds down the shore but generally with this High Pressure bringing us winds out of the northeast from canada, were looking at mostly sunny skies, low humidity and you like todays temperatures, youll like tomorrow way high of 87 degrees. On sunday still looking pretty nice, that front will bring us rain on monday night and tuesday. That will spread a few high thin clouds so more of a filtered sunshine sky and again a high of 87 degrees. If you are down the shore again, you definitely want to listen to the lifeguards. Dont swim when theyre off duty with those rip currents. Tomorrow breezy with some sunshine, 77 degrees. Some morning clouds and sunday definitely the better of the two days down the shore. Sunshine with a high of 80 degrees. If youre heading up to the poconos overnight lows dropping down into the mid50s. Afternoon high 77 and sunday looking really nice, partly sunny, 79. So the exclusive accuweather 7day forecast, a winning weekend, mostly sunny, 87 degrees. On sunday, again lots of sunshine, filtered sunshine, 87. Monday it gets more humid, 86 degrees. Could have a few afternoon thunderstorms. A better chance, though, on tuesday as front slips through, 84 and then on wednesday, back to partly sunny skies, 85 degrees. Thursday mostly sunny, 85. And friday it clouds up with a chance of a shower an high of 84 degrees but all in all this weekend its really looking beautiful. Thank you cecily.
