Brian youre life in okeechobee florida. Tell us what youve seen since your arrival there. Reporter well, rick, monica monica, youve heard the calm before the storm it doesnt apply today. Theres a frantic push to get out of irmas path which of course means if not getting out of florida altogether that means getting as far north as possible. Were in a rest stop inee 1 l ouris also irmr the next couple of days. As luck and fate would have it its actually a calm moment right now. Weve been here for the last 45 minutes or so at this gas station. There has not been an empty gas pump until right now. The roads areimply packed but its not just the roads that are pac another piece of video here we shot on our cell phones as weook at the security lines as people waited to board their flights to get out of dodge. Fortunately we did. We hope not to have to use all of it, if not much of it. An active scene in okeechobee. Well be reporting throughout the duration of this storm. Monica back to you in the studio. Be careful down there. Meantime another scene of calm before the storm this drone video shows an empty miami beach before irma hit. For many folks in south florida hurricane andrew back in 1992 was the definition then of a monster storm and Hurricane Irma is looking far worse by nearly every measure. We go now to meteorologist adam joseph in the Weather Center. Whats the latest on the track. The latest is that the track is still on to hit southern florida but the storm has strengthened a little bit this afternoon. Its a dangerous category four but its only 1 Miles Per Hour off of a category five so basically youre looking at this as a cat five storm with the eye right between the bahamas here and cuba is right here and it will continue to squeeze its way between the two and then aim into western and southern florida. As we take a look at the watches and the warnings all the bahamas key largo, naples under hurricane warnings so its not just the coastline its interior south florida and watches extend all the way up to tampa to melbourne and even close to orlando. Future tracker wind gusts this is sunday at 8 00 a. M. When the worstill be hit keys, cellaring go. Yougo. 101 in key west, 122 in key largo 48 Miles Per Hour at that time in fort myers as that center of the storm heads into the central part of florida by 9 30 sunday night. Tornadoes more than likely. 98 miles an hour to the west of the eye in fort myers and heres the latest track. It will continue to work its way as a dangerous category four storm at this point sunday morning. Winds sustained 145 miles an hour. Again, this is a storm and the path that it has taken is very different than andrew. Andrew came straight across and only affected really south florida and was a more compact storm. This is a bigger storm where the a actual Hurricane Force winds extend 140 miles. So thats about 70 miles on each side of the eye so the entire panhandle of florida will be affected by this hurricane and then by Tuesday Morning, it falls apart to pretty much nothing. It evaporates here as it heads towards atlanta but again the evacuated out of miami south florida even if they went to the north theyre still going to be feeling the effects of at least a category one hurricane in northern florida. Well have much more on the updated track within the hour and also our local forecast coming up, monica and rick in just a little bit. Adam well check back in later. Thank you. Members of the new Jersey Air National guard sent troops down to florida today. Action news was there on the ground and overhead as the convoy left the cape may armory. 40 vehicles in all were deployed. Their trip will take them about two and a half days and they will be ready to help in any way they can when irma hits. We have heard a lot about people trying to get out of florida but there are people who are actually going to florida as well. Brian taff talked to one family we heard just a few moments ago. Many folks have loved ones who will be in the path of the hurricane and theyre heading there to hopefully keep them safe. New jersey correspondent Nora Muchanic is at Trenton Mercer airport in ewing this afternoon with that story. Hi nora. Reporter hi, rick. It sounds counter intuitive. The folks we talked to feel they have to go to take care of relatives. This is not going to be fun. Reporter tim from easton pennsylvania didnt want to give us his last name is a passenger on the last frontier flight out of Trenton Mercer airport heading to florida. While others are fleeing the Sunshine State to escape Hurricane Irma, these folks are heading south into the storm zone. Im going to batten down the hatches because my two daughters live in davenport so got to take care of them. Reporter judy and dick used to live in bayville, new jersey and lived through sandy. Their florida residents now headed back to ride out the hurricane with a 93yearold uncle who lives near them. We have a bathroom in the middle of the house. I think well all get in there if it hits. We have enough time to tape our windows and to bring down the shutters and things like that. Reporter are you worried about heading into it. No, not a bit. Im not worried about anything no,. I have a good outlook on life. So if i die i die. Vietnam lady. Doesnt scare me. Reporter walt krause owns a prefab home. Hell stay with his daughter during irma. It was 49 to go now and if my house blows away, i dont know how i would get there after its all said and done. Reporter not far from the airport workers at the ewing Animal Shelter are also packing for a trip loading this once empty trailer from texas with pet supplies, baby items, blankets and water before it heads back. The shelter already has three rescues from the houston area that were cleared out of shelters there to make room for lost animals after Hurricane Harvey. Supplies that people so desperately need, people, pets they all need right now so its good to give. Reporter and that trailer of supplies is due to leave for texas tonight. There are no more frontier flights out of here heading to florida until after irma hits. Theyve all been canceled for the next three days and wont resume again until tuesday. Live at the airport im Nora Muchanic channel6 action news. Monica. Thank you nora. Today we found some newark delaware along 95. This is the aftermath after one of the most powerful earthquakes to ever strike that region simply crumbled towns. So far at least 32 people are confirmed dead. And you can almost feel the impact. Houses are toppled, decimated in the wake of the 8. 1 magnitude quake. It was centered off the Pacific Coast near the border of guatemala and more than 60 aftershocks continued to rattle that area. This earthquake was so powerful residents in mexico city some 650 miles from the epicenter were shaken out of their beds. Mexicos president is assessing the damage and confirming the number of dead calling this the largest quake to hit the country in a century. Authorities say the victims include a baby who died in a Childrens Hospital who lost electricity cutting offer the ventilator. A million customers were left without power but service has been restored to most people so far this afternoon but the danger there is not over yet. The National Weather service says that region is now under a tsunami warning. Rick and monica. Thanks. Thank you so much. Time right now for a check of the accuweather forecast. A very busy day. Yeah, we definitely are watching Hurricane Irma. We should be getting the latest update within the next 45, 50 minutes from the National Hurricane center. We go to the Weather Center to talk about the difference of a category one and a category five. In a category one storm youre talking about minimal damage with winds between 74 to as much as 90 or so miles an hour up to a hundred. As you get to a category two hurricane, thats when you see the winds up to almost 110. When you start to get a little more extensive damage. Were still not up to the strength of where irma is. Even a category three as you see here winds sustained up to almost 120 or so miles an hour with devastating damage but right now irma is a very strong category four on the verge of a category five hurricane. Thats when you get the dangerous storm surge and really almost every structure is somewhat destructed, is actually ripped apart so to speak here so catastrophic damage and as you get to a cat five thats when you have almost total devastation and what we saw on some of those islands out in the caribbean where the winds are in excess of 157 miles an hour so were talking about again a strong cat four on the verge of a weak cat five storm. The very latest right now with irma has it again squeezing between the bahamas and cuba. You can still see that eye in the center and the storms wind field continues to grow so when it was out over the open waters of the atlantic, the Hurricane Force winds were 50 miles on either side of the eye. That is now 70 miles on either side of the eye and almost 200 miles you feel the effects of even Tropical Storm force winds. As we continue to track it with all the different models thats the spaghetti plots you can see theres really good agreement now that it comes up through the west coast of florida and rides the entire peninsula of florida and then falls apart as you get up towards atlanta georgia. Not only is the wind a concern with this but you are talking about fresh water flooding in the form of rainfall where theyre going to see anywhere between a half a foot and a foot of rain in the entire state. Then you have the storm surge. Miami expecting five to 10foot storm surge but for the keys and southwestern florida could be as high as six to 12 feet and if you think about miami and south beach, their elevation is zero so youre adding five to 10 feet you have water being pushed in with the storm. Back at home, temperatures in the upper 60s to low 70s. Its been a very cool day. We have a little bit of cloud cover thats racing in from the north and west but that will fall apart as we get into the overnight hours. In fact, if youre heading to some Football Games here for high school this evening get the highlights tonight at 11 00 p. M. , just a few clouds, spring some sweatshirts temperatures only in the 60s from kickoff to the fourth quarter. Your four day at 4 00 forecast 71 degrees for tomorrow for that templevillanova game. Very nice on sunday, 74 degrees and going into monday and tuesday mondays a quiet day, 76 and some clouds arrive with the remnants of irma and for us were only going see a little bit of rain developing later on in the afternoon with a high of 73. Hwayt this on the florida turnpike, those northbound lanes absolutely jammed and you see it for yourself, very few to no cars at all heading south. Thats on the eastern side of the state. Very similar scene on the western side on interstate 75 as the path of irma right now brings it right up the center of florida. No one on either side of the state is taking any chances. Want to bring you back out live here right now and give you a sense as to how the scene has changed since we joined you about 30 minutes ago here on action news. As i said its been hot and cold right now very hot. Theres not a single gas pump to be found right now. There are police who are corralling these cars in and if i can draw your attention jason our photographer over to this side, over here youll get a sense that the cars just past this florida Highway Patrol officer actually stretch right back out onto the highway right now. So theyre doing everything they can to keep this an orderly process right now but and we have to tell you people have been very patient and very kind from what we experienced so far but make no mistake about it theyre trying to get out before its too late. Tomorrow its very likely air traffic will stop in the state, highways will be worse. All they want to do is get out of south florida. We are live in florida right now, were going to continue our live reporting throughout the evening. Im brian taff, channel6 action news. Guys. All right, brian well continue to check in with you there. Thank you. Meantime the storm is expected to strengthen as it moves over warmer waters just north of cuba. Lets get right over to meteorologist adam joseph for the very latest on the track and the timing of irma. Even though the storm right now is interacting with some land in the form of cuba as well as the bahamas it actually strengthened this afternoon and this morning. Winds were down to 150 sustained. Theyre back up to 155 on the verge of a cat five but the waters just to the west of the bahamas and south of miami are extremely warm and warm very deep. So this could very well intensify even more once it starts to hit these waters before it heads into south florida. Its 380 miles right now from miami. Moving to the west at 14. Again, were waiting the new track that should be updated within the next half hour but now this still has it, hitting the keys southwestern florida sunday morning winds sustained 145 miles an hour. Brian mentioned folks leaving south florida but even if they head inland to central or northern florida they still need to be in a secure location because theyre still going to get six to 12inches of rain, still going to see at least a cat one or two storm through the entire state of florida and then it falls apart Tuesday Morning near georgia. Storm surge is another major threat for key largo miami youre looking at a five to 10foot storm surge. Thats the wall of water that comes with the storm on the ocean floor and as we take a look at marco island south of fort myers and near the everglades youre talking six to 12foot storm surge closer to where the eye wall will make landfall. As we take a look at the wave heights near the storm 20 to 30 plus feet. You can see how these islands are protecting south florida right now but they are propagating around those islands heading into north florida and the coastline of north South Carolina and even our coast were starting to feel some of the effects of those swells and we here will feel the effects of some pretty big waves over the upcoming weekend even this far away from the storm. The very latest on our local forecast coming up, rick, in just a little bit. All right adam thank you. That track heads it right between marathon and key largo here. This would be on sunday morning around 8 00 a. M. , sustained at 145 miles an hour. Again, the track is going to shift a little bit bmost part this i ing its goes right up the central parts of florida the northern part and then heading into parts of georgia early on Tuesday Morning. It will quickly fall apart as it encounters land and encounters dry to the north in the form of High Pressure but the entire state of florida at least dealing with a category one hurricane with winds on top of storm surge on top of six plus inches of rain. Back at home 73 right now, 74 millville, 68 in allentown. A really nice way to round out the week with some cumulus clouds around. Theres been a couple of showers in northern parts of berks county but overall it is a quiet evening a quiet night with just a few clouds.
