Inside a small sang tee wary in philadelphias Northern Liberties second volunteers with the second Christian Missionary church are working hard to show their faith by sorting supplies donated by 2cmc as theyre called and sister churches all over the region. The supplies are headed for puerto rico. For most of these folks have families victimized by Hurricane Maria. Pastor Jason Rodriguez is the man in charge. People are going dont know what to do. They havent eaten for a couple of days, and once you get to that degree foreman and woman fear theres no food then it becomes dangerous. Reporter kayla received Text Messages but nothing more than from family members on the island. She knows nothing of the status of her hospitalized grandfather. Its very hard to not, you know, at least know something that hes in there. I just i just explain it much the just hard. Very hard. Reporter and so she and her physical low Church Volunteers keep busy sorting supplies to keep their minds off their worries. We have to keep ourselves busy we have to do something for the people, you know, in puerto rico, because if we keep on hearing the news and everything thats just going give us a little bit anxious and, you know, a little bit aggravated. Reporter tuesday night truckload of donations arrived from york, pa. One box was decorated with messages of love and support from the children who helped collect the donation donations. Jonathan rodriguez has been stacking cases of waited water for hours. Too has family and friends back home. Every time i grab a case of water im helping somebody out. Every time i grab i say this is for somebody. You know what, i just pray, hey, its in your hands. I cant do nothing else. I just grab water and keep it going. Reporter volunteers say their fame drives them to help as they watch those who have so little give so much. Those that have, let this moment touch them and impact them and, you know, what you have just give it away. Give it away to someone who needs it much its better when you give it to someone instead of leaving it in your pocket and its not doing nothing in your pocket. Reporter reverend rodriguez says hell be meeting with fellow clergy this saturday to talk about planning the folks here we believe they have a way of getting their donations down to miami then on to puerto rico but clearly logistics has been a major hurdle for lots of would be Good Samaritans that will be the subject of discussion this weekend. Lucy. Absolutely much those relief et cetera are crucial, of course, for whats happening across the island. Thank you, bruce. Big companies are stepping up as well Like American Airlines which sent a plane packed with basic necessities to san juan from philadelphia today. Moments ago a flight from puerto rico land the at Philadelphia International airport. We were there talking to some people on that flight. It is very bad. I mean the whole island is destroyed. There are no services of any kind. People are having a hard time to get supplies. Everything that they need for theyre daily life. People working hard. People have hope that the island will get back to how it was. It was beautiful. Youve got to have hope. American airlines does not yet have regular flights to puerto rico. The special trips are on a flight by flight basis right now depending on what the san january juan airport can handle. Happening right now local couple is worried after noticing something odd in their backyard. Theyre concerned about whats going on in their garden. Their plants are brown and dying. And they say its amtraks fault and they want answers. Fox 29s jeff cole is the guy to get those answers. Live now in mantua. Jeff. Reporter lucy its clear something killed off the plants in this couples backyard but now could it be the kids and animals are threatened . Amtrak says all is well. I would not suggest this. Total annihilation. Reporter jenny chen says tomato and pepper plants once grew her backyard along a fence ceiling off the train tracks blow. But now theyre brown and dying. I was furious not only are there plants in these beds my fiance actually proposed to me by planting tulips in all of these garden beds. Reporter sean sure what it caused to die off in the back half of herman chew what of a yard but guests am guessed amtrak may have had role to play. Their spray extended 16 feet into our property and killed our plants. Reporter amtrak had sprayed the vegetation running ago the tracks. Its easy to see when looking down from the 40th street bridge. This used to be a cher row tomato. Chen eventually spoke with the Pennsylvania Department of agriculture which she says told her amtrak contractors used four herbicides back on august 16t august 16th. What are your thoughts about amtrak spraying in this way and this being the result are. I think its absolutely unacceptable. Theres no need for them to do it to put people lives at risk. To put animals lives at risk to kill other peoples plants that they put money and time and effort 92. In an emailed statement amtrak wrote the spraying is done for safety and visibility arguing the program is required by federal regulations and includes the application of herbicides to control the growth of invasive weeds, brushes and other vegetation. The herbicides we use which meet federal standards and are approved by the state are proven to be not harmful to people or pets. Chen and her fiance told their neighbors and hired an environmental lawyer who is looking for others impacted. The spraying has exposed my clients and their neighbors in all likelihood to harmful chemicals. So that is what we think theyve done wrong. Youre in the allowed to spray in a fashion which goes on to other peoples property and causes harm. Reporter she wants the spraying to stop and demands amtrak tell all it knows. First to not even know what kind of chemicals weve been exposed to. Chemicals we know are designed to kill plants. We cant we can even tell what those repercussions may be. Plaintful philly first reported this story. Estate department of agriculture is investigating. When we get theyre result well report them back to you. Jeff cole fox 29 news. Iain, back to you. Doubledipping pension padder a dire situation in puerto rico after that Hurricane Irma and maria. Today a flight took off from philadelphia landed in puerto rico carrying much needed mys. On board that plane two members of our fox 29 team our Chris Oconnell is live now at Miami International airport. Chris, weve been reporting about the need for days. But you just witnessed it. Reporter that is right, lucy. Good evening from Miami International airport. Where we just got off the play from san juan and we saw first hand the devastation. We saw the despair but what we also saw was help. It is finally on the way to the island tonight. And much of that coming as you said from philadelphia. Take look this morning. Early this morning air bus 330 lifted off and was loaded up with supplies. Thousands and thousands of pounds of supplies. We are talking water, food, diapers, gas cans, generators. One thing they are in desperate need of is chainsaws so people can cut away the trees that are blocking the roads throughout this carribbean island of three and a half million people. Help finally is getting there and people are finally getting their hands on some of this help. Now let me show was we encountered when we arrived in san juan. This is literally video from the plane as we were touching down at San Juan International airport which is absolutely chaos still at this point. But you can just see the airport itself is in shambles. Airport hangars ripped to spreads. We saw airplanes just thrown about twisted in a wreckage right now. They are just cleaning up that airport. So more flights can get into puerto rico. Can get into san juan. Yesterday ten flights got in. Today it was 18. And with more supplies coming in and more planes leaving that means more people can leave puerto rico. We were at the airport for a couple of hours today trying to get out of there like thousands of others there but it is just a mess. It will be a long time before things are back to normal. But certainly tonight at the airport and all across puerto rico people are in the dark. They are without water. They are without their medicines. Well be sharing more of those stories coming up tonight on fox 29 news at 10 00 oclock. Guys . You know, chris, you also talked to that was what 260 passengers on board that plane with you. You go the to talk to a lot them. I know many were really happy to be going back to check on their families and friends. But also anxious at the same time. What struck you about these people heading back to this island . Reporter they couldnt wait get there. And they knew what they were getting 92. They knew many of their homes were lost. They havent even gotten in touch with a lot of their loved ones yet. So but what they wanted to do is get there. They wanted to help. If you know the puerto rican people, they are very close knit kind of people. They wanted to help each other. I was sitting next to a couple on my way here. They live half the year in puerto rico. They went down for hurricane jose. They went down for Hurricane Maria just to be there for the storms to help out their neighbors and thats the way people are getting by because the help theyre getting from the mainland is few and far between. But like i said, they are star starting to get some relief. All right. Chris thanks a lot. Look forwarding to see your stories tonight on the fox 29 news at 10 00.
