Chattanooga, tennessee. Four marines were kill and another was wounded. A Police Officer and one other person were also wounded. Their names have not yet been released, but the gunman is identified as 24yearold Mohammad Youssef abdulazeez. He was born in kuwait but lived in the chattanooga area. He was killed today apparently by the police. We have a team of correspondents covering this story. First well go to Mark Strassmann in chattanooga. Mark . Reporter scott, this is the military recruiting station where it all began. The facade is riddled with bullet holes. Those blue numbers behind me are where the shell cases fell. This strip mall was first of two attacks. Police say around 10 30 a. M. Mark drove right up to the Armed Forces Career center and then gunshots as stunned witnesses watched. We heard a loud pop and then there was a pause. We went to the window to see what was going on. When we went to the window, there was a guy in a silver mustang convertible and he was just unloading a large gun on the recruiting office. Reporter the gunman fired 25 to 30 times then drove off. No one here was killed. One marine was shot in the leg. Police were called and were in pursuit as the suspect drove seven miles away to this navy and Marine Reserve center. Everyone who died was killed at this location. The gunmans mustang was found near the facilitys front entrance. It appeared as though he smashed through an unmanned gate and drove 100 feet inside. Four marines were gunned down. The bodies of two of them lay in the parking lot. The gunman exchanged shots with police and is dead, apparently shot by a Police Officer. Chat knew dwa Chattanooga Police chief fred fletcher. Numerous chattanooga and Hamilton CountyPolice Officers responded. They arrived on the scene extremely quickly, and they actively and enthusiastically engaged in brazen criminal. Reporter people started showing up to grieve the dead right away. The twin attacks lasted a half hour, but for this Community Coming to terms with this deadly day and the deaths of four marines will take much longer. F. B. I. Technicians are now processing this crime scene. Scott, the names of the dead marines have not been released until their families have been notified. Reporter late today investigators sealed off the home where Law Enforcement sources say Mohammad Youssef abdulazeez lived. Its located in hixson, tennessee, which is just about two miles and a few minutes away from where the shootings occurred. Federal Law EnforcementOfficials Say abdulazeez is 24 years old and was born in kuwait and became a naturalized u. S. Citizen. His father was from nablus in the west bank and his mother from kuwait. He was not on any u. S. Terror list, and the f. B. I. Was not aware of his having any terrorist leanings. Officials will now go through his computers and any social media postings as they try to determine what motivated the gunman to act. The f. B. I. s ed reinhold is leading the investigation. Were going to do an intense look at him to see what his connections are. Well look at his Friends Family his Association Associates to determine the cause or the reason why he conducted this attack. Reporter officials will try to find out if abdulazeez was motivated or influenced by isis, the group thats been calling for lone wolfstyle attacks in the u. S. On the military and police during the month of ramadan which ends tomorrow. Over the july 4th holiday federal Law Enforcement officials warned of the potential for an attack. Late today the dependent of Homeland Security called for increased security at certain federal facilities out of an abundance of caution. A week ago today f. B. I. Director james comey said agents had made arrests to thwart july 4th attacks but also act knowledged that isis thousands of followers on twitter and tracking them is a challenge. The centers are designed to be very easy for members of the public to walk into. But thats exactly why they are very easy targets. Now, this Afternoon Police presence increaseed at highprofile recruiting centers like the one in times square in new york city. But the nor yet to issue a nationwide alert to increase security at all recruiting stations. A military spokesman tells cbs news we are continuing to look into this incident, working very closely with both federal and local Law Enforcement agencies to determine exactly what happened and if we need to make any adjustments. The jury rejected his claim that he was insane when he shot and killed 12 people and injured 70 others nearly three years ago. Barry petersen is at the courthouse for us this evening. Barry . Good evening, scott. Well ive got to say the verdict is not much of a surprise, but the speed of the verdict certainly is. This jury just started deliberating yesterday morning. They spent about 13 to 14 hours in the deliberations before reaching their verdict, and lets look at that verdict guilty of murder in the first degree. What that means is the same jury goes right back to work now to deal with the penalty phase. Will james holmes get life in prison or will he be put to death . There are family members who started gathering here like 90 minutes before the verdicts were read. In fact, theyre inside right now because the verdicts are still being read for many of the cases. Some of them wanted holmes to be punished. They will take some kind of comfort in this. Interestingly enough, one of the jurors is a survivor of columbine, the massacre in 1999. He said he didnt really want to be in the jury, but he thought he could bring something to this case. Scott, he was the one the jurors chose to be their foreman.
