Man accused in Hanes Mall shooting claims he can t get fair trial in Forsyth He cites local publicity, BLM protests | Local News

The man accused of fatally shooting Julius Randolph Sampson Jr. outside a restaurant at Hanes Mall in 2019 maintains he can t get a fair trial due to publicity and the racial undertones of the case, according to a motion filed by his attorney last week.  Robert Anthony Granato, 24, is charged with first-degree murder in Sampson s death on Aug. 6, 2019. He is being held in the Forsyth County Jail on a $500,000 bond for the murder charge. Race has been at the center of the case, with some believing that Granato, who is white, shot Sampson, a married father of three who worked as a barber at Hanes Mall, because Sampson was Black. During an altercation that started inside BJ s Restaurant and Brewhouse and spilled outside, Sampson used the N-word and Granato hurled the word back.

Trial set for lawsuit over Winston-Salem inmate s death at the Forsyth County Jail

Forsyth County Jail s medical provider is scheduled to stand trial in April 2023 over allegations that staff repeatedly ignored a Winston-Salem man s asthma, leading to his death more than three years ago.  Deshawn Lamont Coley, 39, was one of two Winston-Salem men who died at the Forsyth County Jail in May 2017. Coley died in the early morning hours of May 2, 2017, less than a month after he came into the jail to serve a six-month sentence for driving while impaired. An autopsy said he died as a result of complications from asthma. On May 26, 2017, another man, Stephen Antwan Patterson, 40, died at the jail.
