“Hannah-Jones, a 2003 master’s graduate of UNC, has equivalent academic credentials to the prior two chairs at the school,” Damon Kiesow, who holds the Knight chair in digital editing and producing at the University of Missouri, wrote in a statement co-signed by 22 other Knight professors.
“Both received tenure upon appointment. The unequal treatment is clear in this case.”
Penelope Muse Abernathy, who served as Knight chair in journalism and digital media economics at UNC before joining Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism as a visiting professor in January, holds a master’s in journalism and an MBA. She published groundbreaking research on newspaper closures, diminished civic life in the resulting news deserts and corporate-owned “ghost newspapers” without a Ph.D. designation after her name.
An array of prominent athletes, artists, entertainers, journalists and academics penned an open letter Tuesday, saying UNC-Chapel Hill’s Board of Trustees has “failed to uphold the first order values of academic freedom and the free exchange of ideas” in its inaction on the tenure of acclaimed journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones.
As Policy Watch first reported last week, the board of trustees failed to act on a recommendation of tenure for the Peabody, Polk and Pulitzer Prize winning journalist as the school’s Knight Chair in Race and Investigative Journalism. Board members said political objections to Hannah-Jones’s work led to the impasse and the school instead offering Hannah-Jones a non-tenured position under a five year contract.

The student government at Rutgers Law School has backed down on its requirement for student groups to promote Critical Race Theory in order to receive funding, according to the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE).
Critical Race Theory is an academic movement occurring at schools across the country that teaches children and college students that the U.S. is fundamentally racist, and that they must view every social interaction and person in terms of race or color in order to be “antiracist.”

John Cena can easily clobber opponents in the wrestling ring and manhandle villains on the big screen, but many
Twitter (NYSE: TWTR) users are calling him out as a weakling (and worse) in his apology for referring to Taiwan as a “country.”
What Happened: Cena’s new film “Fast and Furious 9,” released by
Comcast (NASDAQ: CMCSA) subsidiary Universal Pictures, opened in Asia ahead of its May 28 U.S. premiere. In an interview with TVBS, a Taiwan-based broadcast network, Cena remarked that “Taiwan is the first country that can watch F9.”
Needless to say, this did not sit well with the Chinese government, which rejects the notion of an independent Taiwan and claims it as a sovereign territory, even though the island, officially known as the Republic of China, has been self-governing since the end of the Chinese civil war in 1949.
