We think of leaders and influencers as imbued with
special skills and qualities – either innate or hard-won
merit – that propels them to success, high status and
financial rewards. Self-help books on how to build
leadership skills abound.
However, new research that
models the evolution of social networks suggests it is less
about individual skills and talents, and more about a
dynamic social process – one that is driven by our
instinct to conform to those around us, as well as to seek
influence.

Marlborough’s Mayoral Relief Fund to assist the region
in its storm recovery effort is now open for
applications.
The fund is for residents in the
Marlborough District Council area who have suffered personal
financial or emotional hardship as a result of the July
storm event. The grant amount will be up to $1,000; however
the committee considering the applications has some
discretion depending on evidence of hardship.

I AM HOPE founder and mental health advocate Mike King
says he and his charity are thrilled to be able to hire two
more full-time school ambassadors thanks to a $100,000
donation by award-winning Kiwisaver scheme provider Fisher
Funds.
“Since 2013, we have delivered our I AM HOPE
programme to over 300,000 youth and young people throughout
Aotearoa. This past year alone we have spoken to over 40,000
kids and have travelled over 35,000kms,” says
King.
“I AM HOPE is funded by the people
of New Zealand. We don’t take government money to run our

The Maritime Union says New Zealand freight companies
need to focus on a secure supply chain, and abandon the
“low wage” ideology.
Maritime Union National
Secretary Craig Harrison says there is a growing realisation
that New Zealand needed to have shipping capability to
ensure reliable and secure services.
He says an
increasing number of charters by exporters was proof that
New Zealand needed local solutions to shipping
congestion.
Leading figures in the logistics industry
had acknowledged the need for New Zealand coastal shipping
and new ideas.

This August is set to be a significant month for local
government in Ruapehu with Council due to decide on its initial representation proposal at its meeting on the
25th.
The initial representation proposal , which
will be consulted on with Ruapehu communities, will set out
Council s key representation decisions including the number
of councillors, how they are elected (at large or by wards
or a mix), and whether to have Community Boards.
If
Council opts for wards and Community Boards the initial
representation proposal will also put forward the
boundaries and names for both.
