Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms reflects on accomplishments, regrets

She s already served more than three years, and that time has been full of highs and lows. While the last year in particular has been full of challenges with the pandemic, Bottoms said it’s the time she’ll remember most fondly.
The mayor said she s proud the city stood in the gap for so many, providing 119,000 meals, securing $88 million in CARES Act funding and handing out funding to cosmetologists, barbers, small businesses and the creative industry.
Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms says she’s not sure what’s next – but it has been one of the highest honors to serve as mayor of Atlanta.
“In the same way that it was very clear to me, almost five years ago, that I should run for mayor of Atlanta it’s is abundantly clear to me today that it is time to pass the baton on to someone else,” explained Mayor Bottoms during an early Friday morning press conference.
Atlanta’s 60th mayor said even after raising campaign funds and projection polls indicate she could be elected to serve a second term her decision not to run was made from a place of strength, after thoughtful prayer and consideration.
In a surprise announcement, Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms announced Thursday she will not seek reelection following her first term in office.
Bottoms said the last three years were not what she would have scripted for Atlanta, reported WABE’s Lisa Hagen. She said it was time to pass the baton.
“I don’t know what’s next for me personally and for our family,” said Bottoms on Friday. “But what I do know is that this is a decision made from a position of strength and not weakness.”
Bottoms was once considered a possible candidate for Joe Biden’s vice president. Money from a March fundraiser headlined by the president will be returned to donors immediately, according to Bottoms.

Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms announced Thursday she won t seek a second term, an election-year surprise that marks a sharp turnabout for the city s second Black mayor who months ago was among those President Biden considered as a possible running mate. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution called the decision stunning.
An emotional Bottoms held a press conference on Friday explaining her decision. She said that she had written two potential letters to the people of Atlanta one announcing that she would remain in the mayoral race, and one announcing that she would would not run for reelection. Bottoms released the open letter announcing her decision to withdraw on Thursday evening.
