Traders flow onto pavements - Graphic Road, CMB enclave worst affected

705 Traders in markets within the central business district (CBD) of Accra have extended their activities towards the Graphic Road, taking over the pavements from the Graphic Press and the inner perimeter around the Beyeeman Cold Store. Some traders with secure trading areas within designated parts of the metropolis and those without are vigorously trading at unauthorised locations on the Graphic Road. As part of the Daily Graphic’s national sanitation campaign effort, it observed over a period of three days this week that traders and hawkers had taken over pedestrian walkways in the markets, the frontages of the Greater Accra Regional Fire Service at Makola, the Accra Central Police Station and the Republic House branch of the GCB Bank.

Minister Orders Demolition of Structure at Lashibi

The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Henry Quartey, has ordered the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to pull down a structure erected on a waterway at Lashibi in Accra. The facility, which has been earmarked for a washing bay, has been under construction since 2020, restricting the free flow of water in the community. During a visit to the site by the Minister and a joint team of police and NADMO officials, he ordered authorities to ensure the structure is demolished by Wednesday to prevent flooding in the area. “The Engineer has said he has not authorised this structure to be here. I do not have a problem when people are building but especially with the rains about to set in, we cannot allow these things to go on. NADMO, you will get the machines, National Security will assist you, and it has to go down,” he ordered.
