The number of bus service cancellations is evidence of a systemic problem, says Dave Armstrong
OPINION: I had a morning meeting at the railway station end of town. That’s only a 25-minute bike ride, even for a slowcoach like me. Yet at 7am I opened the curtains and torrential rain was pouring down. I didn’t want to arrive saturated, and there would be few car parks. As thunder and lightning flashed across my face, I was struck with terror – I would have to get a Wellington bus during rush hour! I checked the bus timetable. There were multiple cancellations. Even if my bus was not cancelled, my trip would take over 40 minutes, and that would only be if the bus turned up on time. The bus would apparently drop me off 20 minutes before my meeting, but could I trust it?
