Telangana added 293 new cases to its coronavirus tally, which surged past 2.87 lakh while two more fatalities pushed the toll to 1,546. Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) accounted for the most number of cases with 72, followed by Rangareddy and Medchal Malkajgiriwith 34 and 26 respectively, a government bulletin said on Saturday providing details as of 8 pm on January 1. The total number of cases stood at 2,87,108 including 2,79,991 recoveries. As many as 5,571 patients are under treatment and 26,590 samples were tested on Friday. Cumulatively, over 69.51 lakh samples have been tested. The samples tested per million population was over 1.86 lakh, the bulletin said. The case fatality rate in the state was 0.53 per cent, while it was 1.4 per cent at the national level.

After a day’s uncertainty, garbage lifting has resumed from the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC)’s transfer stations through hired vehicles whose services were stopped on Friday owing to termination of contract.
Contractors of hired vehicles have been reportedly asked by the GHMC’s Transport wing officials to resume operations, pending extension of agreement with them. “They have said nothing about extension of agreement, but merely asked us to resume operations. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is adding 650 more Swachh Autos each with 4.5 tonne capacity to the existing 2,500 autos that collect garbage door to door. GHMC said through a press release that in the first phase, each of the six zones in the city will get 25 swachh autos.
Over 5,500 to 6,000 metric tons of solid waste is collected from the city by the GHMC sanitary section, every day. Under the Swachh Hyderabad project, 2500 (Swachh Auto Tippers) SATs were launched by the civic body to ensure efficient door-to-door waste collection and transfer of the same to transfer stations.

Bharatiya Janata Party on Friday sought the intervention of Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan to instruct the State Election Commission (SEC) to discharge its responsibilities and do an immediate publication of the gazette enlisting the elected members of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), as any further delay would only undermine democracy.
