Park officials say the man regained consciousness without intervention, but CPR was needed before the woman regained a pulse. Both were transported by ground to Flagstaff Medical Center with the female victim transferred to a regional burn center. The names and hometowns of the hikers weren’t immediately released. Park officials say at least two other people drove themselves to the Grand Canyon Clinic with lightning splash injuries, which typically happen when bolts hit objects near the person.

Officials are warning hikers not to rely on water stations, as they may not have adequate water pressure, and to pack more water than they need. The park’s aging water pipeline is subject to breaks and leaks.

Staff received a call that Phoenix resident Jaiquan Carter had fallen about 80 feet from the South Kaibab Trail above the Black Bridge that spans the Colorado River. Park rangers responded and found Carter’s body. He was believed to have been day hiking when the incident occurred.
The National Park Service is conducting an investigation into the death in coordination with the Coconino County Medical Examiner.
