Column: To face challenges, unruly America must mature

As a history major at the University of London, I sometimes found myself explaining and sometimes defending my country to inquisitive Brits who questioned America’s issues with racism and the Vietnam War.
I noted that America was a young nation and, like a teenager, was a combination of great youthful enthusiasm and idealism as well as a lack of perspective.
Perhaps more than any year since the Vietnam War period, America in 2020 is a highly polarized society with a deeply wounded psyche. We have a president who, while popular with millions for his divisive style, has undermined trust in everything from public health to the electoral process. We have careerist politicians who typically are more motivated to retain their power than to always serve the best interests of the public. And we have shown the world how undisciplined we have become via our split personality approach to the COVID crisis.
