Assam Congress chief Ripun Bora resigns over party s poor performance in Assembly polls

Congress Assam unit President Ripun Bora resigned on Sunday, taking moral responsibility to the party s defeat in the Assembly elections.
Bora, who is a Rajya Sabha member, himself also lost the election in the Gohpur Assembly seat to the Bharatiya Janata Party s Utpal Borah by a margin of 29,294 votes.
In his resignation letter to Congress interim President Sonia Gandhi, Bora said that taking the responsibility for the party s humiliating defeat in the Assam Assembly election, he is stepping down from his post. I am extremely saddened and disheartened to inform you that despite my immense hard work, we were unable to combat the divisive and communal politics played by the BJP and RSS. Despite all the odds, I did the best in my capacity to revive the party during the last four years as President of Assam PCC, the 65-year-old leader said in his resignation letter.

Assam: BJP led NDA wins 75 seats in Assam; Congress-led Grand Alliance garners 50 seats in the final tally
Guwahati, May 3 (UNI) In the final results of the Assam Assembly elections 2021, the BJP led NDA won 75 seats out of the 126 assembly seats while Congress-led Grand Alliance managed to win 50 seats.
BJP won 60 seats and Congress was able to garner 29 seats as announced by the Election Commission of India (ECI).
BJP’s alliance partners Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) won 9 seats and United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) won 6 seats.
The Congress-led Grand Alliance partners, All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) won 16 seats, Bodoland People’s Party (BPF) 4 seats and Communist Party of India (Marxist) won 1 seat.

Guwahati, May 3 : The ruling BJP-led alliance, which returned to power in Assam for the second consecutive term, secured 11 seats less than the 2016 assembly polls. The Bharatiya Janata Party, the dominant partner of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), bagged 60 seats, similar to what it got five years ago. The NDA went on to finally win 75 seats in the 126 member assembly.
BJP s old ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) won nine seats against 14 seats that it won last time while its new partner United People s Party Liberal (UPPL) won six seats as the Bodoland based party for the first time contested the assembly elections.

Guwahati, May 2 : The alliance with the AIUDF shattered Congress dream to capture power in Assam, though the grand old party performed better this time as compared to 2016, when it was defeated by the BJP after 15 years, experts and political commentators feel.
Political analysts categorically said that the Congress paid the price for the coalition with the Muslim-based body, All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), in Assam.
Social activist and political commentator Ajoy Kumar Dutta said that the Congress tried to win the hearts of the people in Assam using the sentiments against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, but the Assamese and the indigenous people of the state could not accept the alliance with the AIUDF, led by perfume baron and Lok Sabha member Badruddin Ajmal.

Seen cumulatively, the outcome of the Assembly elections in four major states has a common message: regional parties with tested antecedents are back in favour. Secondly, the farther the people are removed from the Centre, they are more likely to treat the promises doled out by the domineering duo of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) with disdain and to more likely to treat them nothing more than a lot of hot air, totally bereft of even an iota of life-giving oxygen so much in demand across the BJP’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’.
