BHUBANESWAR: Infighting in the Congress state unit turned violent with two groups coming to blows in the presence of party president, Niranjan Patnaik, at the Congress Bhawan here on Thursday. The clash between the dissident groups occurred minutes before the start of the party’s general council and OBC cell meetings.
Tension erupted when some Congress supporters accused the party’s OBC cell president, Bishnu Charan Barik, of hobnobbing with BJD leaders and supporting its candidate, Bijay Shankar Das, in winning the Tirtol assembly byelection in November last year. The protesters also assaulted Barik and demanded his ouster from the Congress.
