The CBI is investigating the role of more people in the Pollachi sexual assault case.
Sources privy to the investigation said the names of at least six persons had cropped up in the statements given by three girls who were allegedly sexually assaulted and blackmailed by a group of men from Pollachi. Of them, the CBI arrested K. Arulanantham, 34, of Vadugapalayam, who was the AIADMK Pollachi town students’ wing secretary (since expelled); Haron Paul, 29, of Achipatty; and P. Her wealth of experience in running the local self government bodies, coupled with social and political commitments did not make the district Communist Party of India CPI(M) think twice to choose Kannathil Jameela to head the Kozhikode District Panchayat the second time.
As president of the district panchayat from 2010-2015, she took the initiative to successfully implement the Sneha Sparsham project for helping persons with kidney diseases. The project got a tremendous response from the public as well as other local bodies. Her comeback, many believe, will re-focus on social and welfare projects once again. As then, the post has been reserved for women now.

Prasanna Earnest of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) will preside over Kollam Corporation as she was elected the Mayor in an open ballot on Monday. A councillor representing Thamarakkulam division, this is for the second time she is donning the Mayor’s garb after a stint from 2000 to 2004. She was sworn in by District Collector B. Abdul Nasar. Later, Ms. Earnest administered the oath of office to Kollam Madhu of Communist Party of India (CPI) who was elected as the Deputy Mayor of the council.

In early December, Kerala held local body elections across the state. The communists won more seats in these elections than all the seats won by the opposition. The right-wing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which runs the Indian government in Delhi under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and the centre-right Indian National Congress, which is the main opposition in Kerala, ran a vicious campaign against the Left, including harsh personal attacks directed at Kerala’s Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. The media – controlled almost exclusively by the major private corporations – led the attack on the Left and ignored new initiatives pushed by the Left in this remarkably difficult period.
