The Governor of Abia State, Okezie Ikpeazu, has commended the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC) for what he described as “peaceful conduct of the Local Government Elections” in the state.
Governor Ikpeazu, who gave the commendation after casting his ballot for the local government polls, alongside his wife, Deaconess Nkechi Ikpeazu, at their polling unit in Ward 7 Unit 002 Umuobiakwa in Obingwa Local Government area, scored the state electoral umpire high for superintending over a peaceful election.
He said, “All the materials are here. The conduct around the polling unit is orderly. If this is replicated in other polling units the way it is here, I will score ABSIEC 90 per cent”.
The Abia Local Government Chairmanship and Councillorship elections began on a shaky note on Friday, due to the late distribution of electoral materials to the polling units across the 17 Local Government Areas.
News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) correspondents, who monitored the exercise in Umuahia North and Obingwa Local Government Areas (LGAs), also report that as at 10.40 am, officials of the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC) had yet to arrive at the polling units visited. x
The election was supposed to start by 8am with accrediction of voters and voting taking place simultaneously.
Some voters, who turned up early for the exercise, expressed disappointment over the delay in the commencement of the poll.

The Abia State Independent Electoral Commission, ABSIEC, has suspended the local government election in all the wards in Umunneochi LGA of the state.
The State Electoral Commission said it called off the exercise following the disruption of smooth distribution of electoral materials to polling units by people suspected to be thugs.
ABSIEC, in a release signed by its Chairman, Professor Mkpa Agu Mkpa, however, announced tomorrow (Saturday) 19th December, 2020.
In the same vein, Chinenye Nwaogu, Special Adviser to the Governor and State Focal Person on Social Investment Programme, commended Governor Okezie Ikpeazu for his passion to deepen democracy and ensure grassroots participation in governance.

The Governor made this known in a statement released via his Twitter account on Thursday night.
According to Ikpeazu, the new befitting headquarters of the Commission is a proof of his administration’s commitment to support democratic institutions.
“Earlier today, I commissioned the newly constructed Headquarters building of the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC).
“Since its creation in 2001, ABSIEC has been operating from an improvised building that had certainly been hampering productivity.
“The new befitting headquarters of the Commission is indicative of my administration’s commitment to support democratic institutions to help our democracy grow even further.
