With March Madness now upon us, there is no better time to talk about national championships. But rather than focus on this year s event, let s look at the past, the distant past, which can still be seen high in the north end of the venerable Allen Fieldhouse.
Let s look in particular at the banners for 1922 and 1923. Like the others, they bear the designation National Champions. But it s a curious thing. There was no national championship in 1922. And there was no national championship in 1923. Indeed, the NCAA would not recognize a national champion until 1939. So whence did Kansas conjure these championship banners?

Marvelous Marvin Hagler, who became one of boxing’s greatest middleweight champions, wielding awesome punching power while shrugging off opponents’ blows, died on Saturday in New Hampshire. He was 66 and lived in Bartlett, N.H.
Hagler’s wife, Kay, announced on his fan club’s Facebook page that he had died “unexpectedly” at their home, but did not provide details.

Alongside him, his twin brother, Lucas. Their point guard? It was former Amateur Athletic Union basketball teammate and rival in high school, Jake Odum. They were a team composed of local talent.
SEVIERVILLE â For the second consecutive year, the Sevier County School System will not host high school proms due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Some community members and parents are organizing proms in lieu of those typically offered by each of the countyâs five high schools.
Ashley and Ray Flasher, owners of Beauty & the Beast Bridal Boutique, have scheduled the All-County Prom on April 30 at the Sevierville Convention Center.
âThe event . is not affiliated with or in any way managed by the Sevier County School System, but must instead be a community-based event put together by parents,â said Tony Ogle, Sevier County School System spokesman.
