GUEST SHOT: April can be the cruelest month for mental health

As spring comes to the valley I’ve been reveling in nature walks with friends. On the pathway south of Melody Ranch, mountain bluebirds balance expertly on last year’s grass stalks. On the slushy Snake River dike north of Emily’s Pond, bald eagles, ducks and swans festoon the waterway. The world is waking up, sloughing off winter and pulsing into action with blooming, courting, nest building. And yet. On a recent walk with a friend I learned about two separate incidents of attempted suicides by adults in our community. Hearing these anecdotes worried me. I had recently spoken with Jackson Chief of Police Michelle Weber, who told me the police department received 31 crisis calls in the 28 days of February. Of those, 40% were mental health related.

20 years of pouring and playing at Finnegan s Pub

Tom Lounges Popular Irish watering hole, Finnegan s Pub (1074 Joliet St.) in Dyer, is gearing up for its 20th Anniversary Party this weekend. Pub owners Roger and Pattijo Porter will celebrate the milestone anniversary all weekend as friends and regular customers pop in and out to share in their good cheer. Giovanni Taliaferro, Director of Memorabilia Design for Hard Rock International, uncrated the “Guitar the Changed the World” on Thursday. The guitar will be displayed inside the casino as part of the music memorabilia collection. Things start on Friday as it always does, with their weekly Karaoke Night, hosted by Jim Melin. Then Saturday rocks with a live performance by veteran Northwest Indiana group, The Wind Gypsies, and for parts of this special show, the Gypsies drummer Neil Holmquist, will step down to make room for his son Eric Holmquist to beat the skins. The younger Holmquist has spent the last several years as the touring drum tech and sometimes

Utah s first lady hopes new awareness campaign can reduce youth suicides

SALT LAKE CITY Utah first lady Abby Cox and others announced a new mental well-being campaign in rural Wasatch County middle and high schools to combat continuing high rates of suicide among youth. I believe that Utah is a unique state with a unique culture, and it s up to us to come together to reduce judgment and stigma around mental health issues so those who are struggling can find help in a community of understanding and support, Cox said Tuesday during a videoconference with students and school leaders from the rural northern Utah county. I m proud of the work we ve done and the progress we ve made, but like all of you, I recognize that there needs to be more done, Cox said.

Dear Abby: Friend does nothing after her daughter rudely screams at me

DEAR ABBY: My best friend (since we were babies) and I are having a disagreement. She had two kids when she was 16 and 17 who are now in their early 20s. One of them still lives rent-free under her roof. My friend struggled her whole life but got a college degree, bought a house five years ago and owns two cars all on her own. She recently has started having friends over on the weekends and drinking. While I don’t do that, I understand she had kids early and wants to have a little fun now in her 40s. She’s very responsible and pays her bills.
