Venezuela warns that US blockade is hampering fight against coronavirus

OFFICIALS in Venezuela warned today that the US blockade against the South American country is hindering its ability to obtain coronavirus vaccines. Sanctions imposed by Donald Trump’s administration have effectively blocked Venezuela from the world banking system, limiting the country’s ability to pay for supplies of the AstraZeneca vaccine through the Covax scheme. Pan American Health Organisation (Paho) spokesman in Venezuela Paolo Balladelli confirmed that Venezuela has access to Covax. “Between 1,425,000 and 2,409,600 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine against Covid have been reserved and should arrive by the end of February,” he said. But to secure this vital delivery, payment must be received by February 9 and government sources say that the US blockade makes that deadline almost impossible to meet.

Push for vaccine teamwork, vigilance At a briefing today, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, PhD, said the drop in cases is encouraging, because it shows that the virus can be controlled, even with new variants circulating that are thought to be more transmissible. However, we have been here before, he warned, referencing declines after earlier surges when some countries opened up too quickly, allowing people to let their guard down and COVID-19 levels to soar again.
