E-cigarettes Do Not Help Quit Smoking

E-cigarettes Do Not Help Quit Smoking by Colleen Fleiss on  December 23, 2020 at 9:08 PM Electronic cigarettes or e-cigarettes, in the form of mass-marketed consumer products do not lead smokers to quit smoking, said a new study published in the American Journal of Public Health, a team led by UCSF s Richard Wang, MD, MAS. E-cigarette use has risen steeply and mostly without regulation over the past decade. The devices have diversified into a dizzying array of vape pens, tank systems, mods, and more, mass-marketed and sold to the public. In these applications and related advertisements, the owners of e-cigarette brands claim that their products help smokers quit and can therefore be considered appropriate for the protection of public health, as stipulated by law. But a new systematic review by UC San Francisco researchers of the scientific literature on this topic puts those claims to the test.

(Allen J. Schaben / Los Angeles Times) By Michelle Andrews Ted Howard started taking Truvada a few years ago because he wanted to protect himself against HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. But the daily pill was so pricey he was seriously thinking about giving it up. Under his insurance plan, the former flight attendant and customer service instructor was charged $500 a month in copayments for the drug plus $250 every three months for lab work and clinic visits.

Congress Doesn t Care About Your Surprise Ambulance Bill

Congress Doesn’t Care About Your Surprise Ambulance Bill Dying? Hail an Uber, because lawmakers exempted ambulances from their medical-bill reforms much to private equity’s delight. Drew Angerer/Getty Images While campaigning this spring in the Democratic primary for Missouri’s first congressional district, then–insurgent candidate Cori Bush found herself struggling to breathe: a hallmark symptom caused by the novel coronavirus that had originated mere months before in Wuhan, China. While now Representative-elect Bush’s case would soon prove severe enough to require hospitalization, she was initially terrified to call an ambulance acquiescing only when her friend Dr. Victoria Dooley insisted on calling one after hearing Bush’s strained efforts to describe what was happening to her over the phone. “I begged her not to because I couldn’t afford it,” Bush recounted on Twitter. “Nobody should have to make that decision.”
