Saudi film Scales to represent Kingdom at Oscars

JEDDAH: Saudi feature film “Scales” has been chosen to represent the Kingdom at the upcoming 93rd Academy Awards (Oscars). Directed by Shahd Amin, the movie, also known as “Lady of the Sea,” will compete in the best international feature film category and was nominated by a special committee and selected by the Saudi Film Commission to be the Kingdom’s entry. The flick will go through several screening stages before a final list chosen by the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, which will be awarding the Oscars is revealed. The winner will be announced at the awards ceremony on April 25.

Novelist Zadie Smith, filmmaker Mira Nair and U.S. poet laureate Natasha Trethewey will offer advice and expertise to aspiring writers participating in the creative writing program. Carol Ann Davis, MFA director and english professor said the three guest lecturers will answer questions about their writing habits, process and experience. Davis said they will each speak about an assigned text of the speaker’s choice as well as their recent work.

North country native makes top 10 list of influential chemists worldwide

Standing before eager young writers, scientists, artists and leaders, George C. Schatz addressed north country graduates during a pre-pandemic ceremony eight years ago. That spring day, the theoretical chemist was presented with an honorary doctorate from Clarkson University, his alma mater. “Forty-one years ago,” he told the Clarkson class of 2012, “I sat where you are now today and I wondered, ‘what is the future going to bring?’” Now nearly 50 years since his own Clarkson graduation, Mr. Schatz was named this year to an updated ranking of the world’s leading chemists.
