Reducing spread of deadly disease central to dog import bill The Healthy Dog Importation Act would provide additional resources to monitor the health of dogs brought into the U.S. July 12, 2021 Minimizing the spread of diseases that could be dangerous to both human and animal health is the goal of the recently reintroduced Healthy Dog Importation Act. Launched with support from the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the proposed legislation would provide additional resources to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to monitor the health of dogs brought into the U.S. and ensure imported canines are not carrying diseases that may threaten animal and public health.

Canine distemper outbreak closes Maricopa County animal shelter

View Comments A highly contagious canine distemper outbreak at Maricopa County Animal Care and Control has caused its west shelter in Phoenix to close some of its buildings over the weekend. On July 2, the shelter announced it had several confirmed cases of distemper  a highly contagious and deadly virus within its west facility. As of Thursday morning, the shelter confirmed  12 positive cases of the disease after testing 100 dogs. This resulted in a quarantine of dogs in four of the shelter’s buildings and caused a disruption of day-to-day services. The county shelter has also paused dog-to-dog introductions at its Mesa and Phoenix facilities.
