Getting access to vaccines during coronavirus pandemic has been challenging for many, but Austinites who are blind or visually impaired say acquiring COVID-19 vaccines for themselves has been especially difficult.
Earlier this month, Walgreens partnered with organizations such as the local chapter of the National Federation of the Blind and Austin Lighthouse for the Blind to host a vaccination event for hundreds of people who are blind or visually impaired.
But those who participated in the event, though grateful to finally get a dose of the vaccine, say more needs to be done by city officials and leaders to increase access to people in the city who are blind or visually impaired.

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - The Evansville Trail Coalition is asking for public input about the new I-69 Bridge to Henderson in hopes of making it more pedestrian-friendly.
Trail coalition officials are concerned with safety of the current bridge model. They say with how much money is going into the project, anyone should be able to use it.
Officials say the current bridge design will not be accessible to bikers or pedestrians.

DULUTH, Minn.-Plans are now in the works to modernize UMD’s 70-year-old science building.
The college is now asking the state to kick in $1.6 million with the university dedicating $800,000 for the project, to create a design for how it can be modernized.
Then the college would need additional funds to actually create that design for the building, which isn’t being used much by students, as hazardous materials are being removed and labs are decommissioned.
Leaders from the school say the upgrades are much needed.
“As you can imagine, a building that was built in 1950 and has had patch work renovation since then, we are far out of compliance with respect to ventilation, with the respect to the American Disabilities Act and just for accessibility in general,” said Erin Sheets, Associate Dean of the Swenson College of Science and Engineering.

A construction company’s plan to build a new facility to house an early childhood education program received support from the Mitchell Planning and Zoning Commission.
To advance the building plan, Paul Groenweg, of Groenweg Construction, applied for a conditional use permit to allow the 4,515-square-foot building to become the new location for Mitchell’s Head Start early education program. The Planning Commission on Monday unanimously approved the conditional use permit.
