As the nationwide debate over reopening schools raged, teachers unions gave overwhelmingly to Democratic political candidates.
Two of the nation s largest teachers unions, the American Federation of Teachers and the National Education Association, gave almost entirely to Democratic candidates versus Republican candidates, according to Open Secrets. In 2020, at the same time that parents were fighting for schools to reopen, 98.29 percent of political donations from AFT went to Democratic candidates while just 0.26 percent went to Republicans. NEA, similarly, gave 95.17 percent of its donations to Democrats while just 2.21 percent went to Republicans. For those wondering why Senate Democrats would prioritize teachers unions over the well-being of students, the answer is simple: Follow the money, the National Republican Senatorial Commitee said in a statement on Wednesday. Political action committees associated with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., received a flood of donations from teachers unions as they fought to keep schools closed while a growing number of parents pushed to get their children back into classrooms.
Pelosi’s House Majority PAC, which showers Democratic House candidates with campaign cash, received $1 million from the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) PAC, while her leadership committee, PAC to the Future, was given $5,000 from AFT’s PAC during the first three months of the year.
The AFT is one of the largest teachers unions in America and until recently had resisted reopening schools. The seven-figure contribution to the House Majority PAC, which will ultimately benefit dozens of Democrats in the 2022 midterm elections, was by far the largest from the group during the first quarter.

Report: Teachers Unions Increased Funding For Democrats Who Thwarted School Reopenings
Teachers unions have increased their political donations to Democrats since schools shut down, a new report from Roll Call suggests.
Since schooling in the United States was confined to remote learning, the infamous American Federation of Teachers PAC, whose president Randi Weingarten used anti-Semitic rhetoric to further justify keeping schools closed, donated more than $1.6 million to mostly Democrats and left-leaning political action committees.
One million dollars of that total donation went to a super PAC specifically dedicated to bolstering liberal candidates, significantly outpacing the $45,000 the union awarded to committees “in the first three months of 2019, the same point in the two-year election cycle.”
