Are COVID vaccines safe for pregnant women? The CDC says yes, but more study is needed

Are COVID vaccines safe for pregnant women? The CDC says yes, but more study is needed. Updated 1:47 PM; A new study published Wednesday showed promising evidence that the Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines don’t pose serious risks to pregnant women. But researchers stressed the findings from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study are preliminary and more information is needed. The study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, included 35,691 participants who identified as being pregnant when they received the vaccine or became pregnant shortly thereafter. To date, it’s one of the largest reviews on COVID-19 vaccinations in pregnancy.

The preliminary results of the study, which was published in the  New England Journal of Medicine, did not show obvious safety signals among pregnant persons who received mRNA COVID-19 vaccines. The study found that the rate of premature births, miscarriages, low-birth weight, and other complications in women who received the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines appear to be similar to the published incidences in pregnant populations studied before the COVID-19 pandemic.
