The 2021 LA Auto Show has been pushed back from its previous date in late May to November as COVID-19 continues to wreak havoc on the auto show calendar.
Strong US demand for trucks and sports utility vehicles (SUV) boosted General Motors Co’s (GM) fourth-quarter profits and the company on Wednesday projected higher earnings despite up to a US$2 billion hit from the global semiconductor shortage.
The results capped a rollercoaster year for GM and other US automakers that were forced to shut down plants last spring due to the coronavirus pandemic, resulting in a massive hit to second-quarter sales.
However, GM saw a surprisingly hot market in the second half of the year.
Carmakers now are dealing with another unexpected problem in the wake of COVID-19: a global shortage of semiconductor

Introduced earlier this year at the 2015 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the second coming of Ford’s GT has made its European debut at the ongoing 2015 Geneva Motor Show. For the uninitiated, the first Ford GT supercar was introduced to the world a decade ago as a homage to the original Le Mans-dominating racer from the 60s, the Ford GT40.
Set to go on sale next year, the low-slung, Canadian-made reboot of Dearborn’s legend will arrive packing a 3.5 litre, twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6 engine that pumps out “over 600 hp” or in other words, the most powerful EcoBoost mill ever developed.
Hyundai, however, did not provide on its earnings call any update on recently reported talks between it and Apple Inc about an electric car and battery tie-up.
On sales, the automaker said it expects a 12% jump in its biggest market, North America, in 2021. Its sales in the fourth quarter ended December slipped 2% in the region.
“With our lineup with new models ready to launch in the United States, we aim to increase our market share to 4.8% this year,” Senior Vice President Koo Za-yong said on the call.
Last year, the company managed to slightly advance its U.S. market share to 4.4%, helped by sales of the Palisade SUV and Kona EV, he said, despite a 10% fall in sales.
