Beyond that, the main takeaway seems to be that social media remains a place potentially fraught with peril – for students, schools and everyone else.
The court, in an 8-1 decision, ruled that a Pennsylvania school district violated the First Amendment by suspending 14-year-old Brandi Levy from her school’s cheerleading team after the student, relegated to the junior-varsity squad, posted to her Snapchat “F - school f - softball f - cheer f - everything,” adding a photo of herself and a friend extending their middle fingers.
Levy’s parents, after unsuccessful attempts to appeal the suspension with the school district, filed a federal lawsuit with the support of the American Civil Liberties Union.

“Our Creator endowed us with the right to life, and yet millions of children lose their right to life every year because of abortion,” Texas Governor Greg Abbott says as he signs Senate Bill 8 (the Heartbeat Bill) into Texas law. In doing so, he maintains his stay on the list of politicians who have used God as a justification for passing oppressive policy.
The bill at hand bans abortion as soon as a fetal heartbeat is detected, which generally occurs five to seven weeks into a pregnancy – before or around the average time women begin to learn they’re pregnant – and makes no exceptions for rape. The law will take effect in September, with private citizens expected to enforce it instead of the government. These citizens can sue abortion providers and those who assist with the procedure, even if they are not personally affected by it.
Members of Sununu’s diversity council quit over NH budget’s ‘divisive concepts’ restrictions

CONCORD More than half of Gov. Chris Sununu’s Advisory Council on Diversity and Inclusion resigned Tuesday, saying his decision to sign a state budget that limits the discussion of systemic racism and other topics has derailed the work they were appointed to do.
In their resignation letter, 10 of the 18 members said the budget provision is in direct conflict with the mission they were given in December 2017 when Sununu created the group.
“We accepted your appointment to this council out of commitment and love for this state and your stated desire to advance diversity and inclusion,” they wrote. “Given your willingness to sign this damaging provision and make it law, we are no longer able to serve as your advisors.”
