WASHINGTON Whenever she talks about her mother, Renee Langiotti keeps tissues close by.
Her mother, Susan Bartholomay, was killed on a Florida interstate highway in May 2015 after the car she was riding in swerved to avoid a large truck that was drifting over. Her car collided with another vehicle and wound up wedged underneath the truck trailer.
Langiotti’s mother was one of 4,095 people who died in crashes involving large trucks in 2015 a number that swelled by 22% over the next four years.

Pete Buttigieg on Thursday made his first appearance in Washington as presumptive incoming head of the Department of Transportation (DOT). The former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, testified for three hours before the Senate s Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee – the first step in the process of the Senate confirming him as the next Secretary of Transportation.
The hearing was mostly congratulatory and speculative, and on nearly every topic related to trucking, Buttigieg took a wait and see approach. We ll look into it, he said on questions about potential further hours of service reforms and pilot programs paused by President Joe Biden on his first days in office. Likewise, Buttigieg gave the same answer on questions about ongoing waivers from the ELD mandate for livestock haulers and exemptions for interstate motor carriers from state-enacted meal and rest break laws for drivers.

U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary nominee Pete Buttigieg acknowledged on Thursday that raising the federal gas tax will be one of the options to fund major investments needed for highway infrastructure. I think all options need to be on the table, Buttigieg said during his confirmation hearing before the U.S. Senate s Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee. The current state of the highway trust fund [HTF] is that there s more going out than coming in, and up until now that s been addressed with general funding transfers. I don t know whether Congress would want to continue doing that. I think in the near term we need a solution that can provide some predictability and sustainability. In the long term, we need to bear in mind that as vehicles become more efficient and we pursue electrification, sooner or later there will be questions about whether the gas tax can be effective at all.

UK – This week s round up starts in London as, whilst the organisers of many freight and logistics related events are bemoaning the fact that, for them at least, 2021 will be a write off, those who put on London International Shipping Week (LISW) are more hopeful their plans will not be subject to change, particularly as vaccines roll out. The organisers of LISW21 are still seeking sponsors, with details HERE.
