Among the more than 5,500 pages of the coronavirus relief bill passed by Congress this week were a number of provisions aimed at expanding broadband and telehealth services, as well as addressing the needs of rural hospitals.
The wide-ranging bill was still embroiled in controversy by Wednesday, with President Donald Trump pushing for more stimulus money for individuals and some members of Congress, such as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) saying they hadn t had time to read the mammoth legislation.
Digital health advocates also expressed mixed feelings, with the American Telemedicine Association representatives saying the organization appreciated some of the provisions in the bill while noting other ways in which it fell short.

Telemedicine has been around for more than 40 years. Why the change now? Since March, when the pandemic started, Medicare and many insurance companies temporarily extended payment for telemedicine so health care practitioners could serve patients without being physically present. This social distancing appeared a safer way to deliver care. Now, your insurance may cover a telemedicine visit as it did prior for an in-person office visit.
The American Academy of Family Physicians tells us that telemedicine is the practice of medicine using technology to deliver care at a distance, over a telecommunications infrastructure, between a patient at an originating site and a physician or other practitioner licensed to practice medicine at a distance site.

The American Telemedicine Association, the Connected Health Initiative and other industry groups issued a letter to Congress on Friday urging legislators to extend temporary telehealth flexibilities until the end of 2021.
The groups, which also include
Healthcare IT News parent company HIMSS, noted that the COVID-19 public health emergency has ushered in an unprecedented expansion to telehealth.
At the same time, however, providers and patients face continued uncertainty about the future of virtual care – made even more tenuous by legislators failure, thus far, to enact permanent changes to telemedicine policies. The continued risk of telehealth flexibilities ending with each subsequent 90-day renewal of the PHE adds additional uncertainty to an already strained health care delivery system. Patients and their health care professionals should not have to worry if they will be able to continue to receive or deliver necessary care, read the letter.
