Last month, the Department of Labor added Indian sandstone to its watchlist of products potentially derived from child labor, partly as a result of reporting by the American Bar Association Center for Human Rights. The Center’s latest report, Tainted Stones: Bonded Labor and Child Labor in the India-U.S. Sandstone Supply Chain finds that the industry employs nearly three million workers but is marred by the persistence of bonded labor, intergenerational bonded labor, and child labor. Sandstone is a commonly used stone for paving and construction likely you’ve seen some form of it in a large office lobby or outdoor installation.

The American Bar Association’s Center for Human Rights has asked the federal government to drop criminal charges against Omoyele Sowore, convener of the #RevolutionNow movement.
Sowore, who was the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the 2019 general election, was arrested and detained in August 2019 for planning a nationwide protest against the government.
He was subsequently arraigned for treason, but had pleaded not guilty. The activist cum journalist was granted bail in November, but part of the conditions restricts him to Abuja.
In a preliminary report released during the week, the centre said the government has been unable to provide sufficient evidence against Sowore since the trial began over a year. It also accused the government of violating Sowore’s rights, and asked that he be allowed to travel to visit his family, The Cable reports.

The American Bar Association’s Center for Human Right has declared the detention of human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, illegal under international law.
The declaration comes two months after the United Nations Working Group on arbitrary detention called on the Nigerian Government to stop the unlawful prosecution of Sowore for his attempts to organise a peaceful protest in August of 2019.
