Luke Glendening broke out of a drought and scored for the first time in 19 games. Then he did it again.
His pair of goals Monday at American Airlines Center pulled the Detroit Red Wings even with the Dallas Stars, and a solid performance by Thomas Greiss forced the game to a shootout. The Stars ended up winning, 3-2, after five rounds.
“I thought we competed hard,” coach Jeff Blashill said. “We tried to do it right defensively. We talked about playing a simple road game and for the most part, we did that. Overall we did a pretty good job having poise but also making their D turn. They’re a hard team to create against. In the end we were in position to win the game and it’s unfortunate we didn’t.”

In describing the importance of having Luke Glendening in your lineup, Detroit Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said, “The better your team is, the more valuable he becomes.”
That explains why Glendening seems to draw a lot of interest at the trade deadline. Playoff-contending teams value his defensive game, penalty killing ability, face-off proficiency and work ethic.

It’s been awhile since Detroit has played a playoff game, and it looks to be awhile yet. But for the next week they can get a small taste of what that might be like. It’s not just that they are playing the Dallas Stars, a team that went on a run to the Cup Final last year. After all this Stars team is a far cry from the team they were last year, after struggling early in the year with Covid, and a myriad of injuries throughout the season. But the Wings will play them four times in a row into next weekend. Next season there will be more back to backs to be sure, but you won’t see Detroit get into a series quite like this. Now of course the stakes aren’t there, at least for Detroit, but why not make something out of this with Dallas and give the fans something to get excited about. At the very least this series will give the Wings a chance to play spoiler.

It could be a while before the Detroit Red Wings reach the playoffs, but this week will have a postseason feel.
The Red Wings’ next four games are against the Dallas Stars, starting tonight at American Airlines Center (7:30, NBC Sports Network).
“They’re fighting for their (playoff) lives right now,” Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin said. “It’s a great challenge. It’s something we need to step up to. They went to the Stanley Cup finals last year; they know playoff hockey. I’m sure they’re treating every game from here on out like playoff hockey. It’ll be a great test for our team.”
