Picture: FIJIAN GOVERNMENT An additional general budget support package of $55million to assist the Fijian Government in their continued management of the impacts of COVID-19 was announced today by the Australian government. This was after the signing of the agreement in Suva today by  Fiji’s Minister for Economy, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, and Australian High Commissioner to Fiji, John Feakes, under the strict supervision of Ministry of Health & Medical Services – Fiji officials. According to a post on the Commission’s Facebook page, “the impacts of COVID-19 have taken a toll on both of our countries, our economies, and our livelihoods and we are pleased  to be supporting the Fijian Government as they continue their commendable efforts to manage the current COVID-19 outbreak alongside the MHMS team”.

And the burden of monthly rental and bills payment had once again haunted the Lautoka businessman. Mr Mani said he could not think of a better way to pay next month’s rent of $3500 now that the business had closed. “I had to shut down my business because it is now classified under high-risk businesses and I had no option but to send my staff back home,” he said.

COVID-19 vaccines shipped by COVAX arrive in Fiji Format Suva - Fiji became the first country in the Pacific islands to receive COVID-19 vaccine doses shipped via the COVAX Facility, a partnership between CEPI, Gavi, UNICEF and WHO. This is a historic step towards achieving the goal to ensure equitable distribution of COVID-19 vaccines globally, in what will be the largest vaccine procurement and supply operation in history. The arrival of 12,000 doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine marks the first batch of vaccines to arrive in the Pacific region under the COVAX Facility, in its unprecedented effort to deliver at least two billion doses of COVID-19 vaccines by the end of 2021.
