Benchmark indices ended with steep losses on Monday, extending fall for the second straight session. All the sectoral indices on NSE ended in red. Metal shares corrected sharply. Rising coronavirus cases across US, Europe and China weighed on investors sentiment.
The barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, dropped 470.40 points or 0.96% to 48,564.27. The Nifty 50 index lost 152.40 points or 1.06% at 14,281.30.
Reliance Industries (up 2.37%), HDFC Bank (up 1.15%) and ITC (up 0.76%) supported the indices. Axis Bank (down 2.79%), Infosys (down 2.49%), HDFC (down 2.49%) and ICICI Bank (down 1.94%) dragged.
In the broader market, the BSE Mid-Cap index fell 2.01% and the BSE Small-Cap index lost 1.89%. Both the indices underperformed the benchmark indices.

New Delhi [India], January 17 (ANI): India continues on its steady trajectory of reporting a constant downfall in the daily new cases and a significant decline in the active cases. In the last 24 hours, 15,144 daily cases have been recorded. The active caseload of the country has fallen to 2,08,826. The daily new cases have been below 20,000 for the past 10 days, it said.
17,170 new recoveries were registered during the last 24 hours. The share of recovered cases stands at 96.58 per cent. The total recovered cases are 10,196,885. They exceed the active cases by 99,88,059 (48.83 times more).
80.53 per cent of the new recovered cases are observed from 10 States/UTs.

BHUBANESWAR: Odisha began its Covid-19 vaccination drive on Saturday at 161 session sites across the state, where 16,100 people will be inoculated, officials said.
A 51-year-old frontline worker at Capital Hospital became the person to be administered the jab around 11am, shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the nationwide rollout of the vaccination drive via video conferencing, they said. The first vaccine dose was given to a class-IV frontline worker at Capital Hospital here. The director of the hospital and a doctor were the next to be inoculated, additional chief secretary, health and family welfare, PK Mohapatra, told reporters here.

At 14:20 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, dropped 685.77 points or 1.38% to 48,898.39. The Nifty 50 index lost 224.50 points or 1.54% at 14,371.10.
In the broader market, the S&P BSE Mid-Cap index fell 1.90%. The S&P BSE Small-Cap index skid 1.44%.
Sellers outpaced buyers. On the BSE, 876 shares rose and 2081 shares fell. A total of 136 shares were unchanged.
COVID-19 Update:
Total COVID-19 confirmed cases worldwide stood at 9,31,05,607 with 19,94,440 deaths. India reported 2,13,027 active cases of COVID-19 infection and 1,51,918 deaths while 1,01,62,738 patients have been discharged, according to the data from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.
