New port tariffs take effect today

Graphic Online BY: Maclean Kwofi Category: Business News Dr Joseph Obeng President of the Ghana Union of Traders Association & Mrs Esther Gyebi-Donkor General Manager in charge of Marketing and Corporate Affairs at GPHA 30.5k Shares 705 Effective today, Monday March 1, the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) will begin the implementation of new tariff for services rendered to shipping lines at the seaports. The new tariff regime applies to containerised cargo for port dues, stevedoring, cranage and terminal handling (empty container). They are to increase on an average of 15.74 per cent for 20-footer container and 16.81 per cent for 40-footer container. Targeting only shipping lines, the tariff adjustment, the GPHA explains, is to help generate more revenue to settle loans secured to build the Terminal Three of the Tema Port and other port infrastructure.

my Say: Statutory bodies need meaningful parliamentary oversight

The Federal Land Development Authority’s (FELDA) current efforts to reverse its fortunes follows years of financial misadventures, which resulted in accumulated losses of RM10.2 billion during the 2015-2018 period alone. Its experience is, sadly, not unique as other statutory bodies too are wrestling with the results of past mismanagement and failure in oversight. Lembaga Tabung Haji’s previous net liability position, the Port Klang Free Zone (PKFZ) debacle, National Higher Education Fund Corp’s (PTPTN) management of defaulting borrowers, the cancellation of PR1MA housing projects, Tourism Malaysia’s procurement issues, Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia’s (CAAM) downgrade by the US Federal Aviation Administration, Majlis Amanah Rakyat’s (MARA) failed investments, and National Water Services Commission’s (SPAN) effectiveness as a regulator following constant water disruptions are just a handful of examples, each one years in the making.

Over 52,000 workers receive first dose of COVID-19 vaccine in Singapore » Borneo Bulletin Online

February 13, 2021 SINGAPORE (CNA) – More than 52,000 workers across the transport sector have already received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, the Ministry of Transport (MoT) announced. These include 39,000 frontline staff in the aviation and maritime sectors or about 90 per cent of the 43,000 expected to be vaccinated under the Sea-Air Vaccination Exercise launched last month. Meanwhile 14,000 workers from Singapore’s public bus and train operators have received their first jab of the vaccine since January 25, with 66,000 more land transport workers scheduled to receive their vaccination over the coming months, MoT said. Additionally, three flights operated by the Singapore Airlines (SIA) Group’s carriers – SIA, budget airline Scoot and regional carrier Silkair – took off on Thursday with all pilots and cabin crew vaccinated against COVID-19.
