The funding comes in the wake of a partnership project between Te Taiwhenua o Tamatea and Central Hawke’s Bay District Council (CHBCD). Rākei Ora was funded through the Government’s $230 million Provincial Growth Fund: Covid-19 response – redeployment and acceleration’ fund, in May last year. Administered by the Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment, the fund included a grant of up to $70 million for the renovation of town halls, war memorials, marae and Pasifika churches. The council on behalf of Te Taiwhenua o Tamatea applied to the fund, with council providing ongoing support for the delivery of the project.

The trail, which is part of the Waimarama Rd Cycle Trail Safety Upgrade project, will run between Te Mata Rd and Craggy Range winery in an attempt to improve safety for cyclists and motorists.
