The Perfect Christmas Present for Nigerians, By Ebere Onwudiwe 4 min read
…for that other present that Nigerians deserve, there is no better gift than for the government to design and implement policies to counter these three challenges to a peaceful Nigeria.
The recent release of the boys abducted by gunmen from Government Science Secondary School in Kankara village, Katsina, is a great Christmas present to Nigeria’s tattered external image and a boost to the country’s self-confidence. After these years of persistent insecurity, Nigerians deserve another gift, if you ask me.
One eyewitness account states that the boys, these latest victims of Nigeria’s increasing insecurity, looked piteous, while “limping with blisters on their feet.” Exhausted and traumatised, they were wearing fear and confusion on their faces as Al Jazeera’s Ahmed Idris powerfully witnessed.
The Presidency has asked Nigerians to be thankful for the little mercies shown to them by the President Muhammadu government and emphasize on them instead of finding faults.
Femi Adesina, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, stated this on Channels Television’s Sunday politics.
He said Nigerians should be thankful that bombings by Boko Haram insurgents no longer happen on a daily basis in the country.
Adesina stated this while responding to the complaints by Nigerians over the rising insecurity in the country.
He recalled that there was a time in Nigeria when bombs would go off for about 6 times in a single day, insisting that since Buhari became President, the killings had reduced.

Security is not something you can put a timeline on – Adesina
The Senior Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to President Muhammadu Buhari, Mr Femi Adesina, has urged Nigerians to continue to exercise patience with the Federal Government especially with regards to issues of insecurity in the country.
The President’s media aide made the appeal during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics when asked how much longer Nigerians should wait till the issue of insecurity is resolved.
According to him, security is not something that a timeline can be put on, rather it is an ongoing issue that needs to constantly be reviewed.
“..the convoy was hit in northeast Borno state on Saturday, and militants also attacked a transport convoy in the same region a day before, kidnapping 35 people and killing one woman.” the report said.
More than 30, 000 people have been reportedly killed by the insurgents since 2009 while not fewer than eleven vicious attacks have been carried by the group in the year 2020 alone.
On 28 November 2020, about 110 rice farmers in Zabarmari, were killed by the Boko Haram militants while the factional leader of the group, Abubakar Shekau, in an audio message ‘claimed’ responsibility for the recent abduction of 330 students of Government Science Secondary School in Kankara, Katsina State.
