The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has called on the government at various levels to live up to the responsibility of securing the lives of Nigerians across the country.
It warned that anything short of this would force members of the union to down tools until when it would be safe for them to teach and guide pupils and students without fear of abduction.
The union gave the warning in a statement on Tuesday by its Secretary-General, Dr Mike Ene, while condemning the recent attack on a school in Katsina State.
“What has happened again?”
“What has not happened? The other week, we were all lamenting that 43 farmers were slaughtered in Zabarmari, in Borno State, and now the whole world is being told that hundreds of school boys have been kidnapped from their school – a Government Science Secondary School in Kankara, Katsina State.”
“And you are surprised?”
“What do you mean I am surprised? I am not surprised. I am shocked and angry.”
“But when Northern Governors, traditional rulers and the Sultan of Sokoto warned that the situation in the North had become very desperate and dangerous, what was the response from those whose job it is to ensure the safety of lives and property?”

Dec. 15 (UPI) The leader of Nigerian Islamic extremist group Boko Haram said Tuesday his group was behind the abduction of more than 300 boys from a school in the northwestern part of the country last week.
The leader, Abubakar Shekau, said in an audio recording that Boko Haram was responsible for the abductions at the Government Science Secondary School in Kankara, in Katsina State on Friday.
