London: Prince Philip was a decorated military veteran who served in the Royal Navy before his wife, Queen Elizabeth II, ascended to the British throne in 1952. But when the royal family gathers for his funeral at Windsor Castle today, none of them will wear their military uniforms, in a notable break with tradition.
The question of who would wear what to Saturday’s ceremony has been a hot topic in Britain since the duke’s death on April 9, posing an awkward dilemma for the royal family, which is trying to smooth over several public crises at once.
Earlier this week, Britain’s tabloids reported that Harry, who announced he would step back from his role as a working royal last year, might be the only member of the family in civilian dress after losing his honorary military titles in February - despite having served in the British army for a decade, earning the role of captain.

Prince William and Kate Middleton have come an awfully long way since meeting at St Andrew s University back in 2001, while both studying Art History. Since then, the public have watched the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge marry in a spectacularly grand royal wedding and celebrate almost twenty years together (with ten of those as a married couple), as well as welcome three adorable children into the fold – Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.
The Duke and Duchess have remained steadfastly loyal to one another over the years, striking an excellent balance of sharing personal family moments with the public (Kate even took up photography so that she could be on hand to capture those special occasions, rather than having a professional photographer in the mix) and maintaining a decent level of privacyc for themselves too. Princes Harry, William share touching, separate tributes to Prince Philip after his death KATE FELDMAN
Days after Prince Philip’s death, his grandsons, Harry and William, each spoke warmly of the Duke of Edinburgh, who died Friday at the age of 99.
“My grandfather was a man of service, honor and great humor. He was authentically himself, with a seriously sharp wit, and could hold the attention of any room due to his charm and also because you never knew what he might say next,” Harry said in a statement.
“He will be remembered as the longest reigning consort to the Monarch, a decorated serviceman, a Prince and a Duke. But to me, like many of you who have lost a loved one or grandparent over the pain of this past year, he was my grandpa: master of the barbecue, legend of banter, and cheeky right ‘til the end.”
