THE new Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine has been rolled out to GP surgeries in Blackburn with Darwen. Blackburn with Darwen CCG have received the British manufactured vaccine which is said to have revolutionised the vaccination process due to it being able to be kept at fridge temperature - unlike the Pfizer vaccine which needs to be stored at ultra-low temperatures, making it difficult to distribute to care home settings. Dr Mohammed Umer, Clinical Director for Blackburn with Darwen Primary Care Networks said: “We have received the Oxford / AstraZeneca vaccine and this is fantastic as it is more easily deployable across other settings.

UNIVERSITY Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust is postponing all non-urgent surgical operations at Furness General Hospital (FGH) with immediate effect. The Trust is reluctantly postponing appointments for planned non-urgent surgical procedures (operations at the hospital) due to the current pressure facing the hospital, and in particular the Intensive Care Unit, because of increasing numbers of patients with COVID-19. A similar measure is being put into place at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI) from Monday January 11. Outpatient appointments will be unaffected, as will appointments for patients who require clinically urgent operations or procedures, such as surgery as part of their cancer treatment.
